Playtime!

This last weekend Amy, my wife and business partner, went away for the weekend to the mountains. This is an annual trip that her mother and sister and sister-in-law take. They are away for four days and they have a fantastic time. This little trip has been my opportunity to implement Daddy Weekend which has now been in existence for six years and we have a blast doing everything from the Canadian Finals Rodeo to the World Waterpark. We’ve even done our own road trips. It’s a great time to hang out and play, and play we do.
This year has been stressful with late seeding to a nonexistent harvest, a dry spring and wet summer or the opposite for some. 2019 has presented some unique challenges for everyone in the Agriculture industry. This Daddy Weekend is typically over the Remembrance Day weekend and is usually at the tail end of harvest and, most of the time, it’s a symbol of the end of harvest and beginning of winter. Agri – Trade Equipment Expo in Red Deer brings up similar feelings for a lot of us. The past few years its been challenging. Many producers and buyers that I talk to every year at the show have been busy with harvest.
Now why am I talking about how miserable and long harvest has been? We don’t really need a reminder of that, do we? True, but I’ve rediscovered a piece that could very much help us all in these damp and dark times and that is play time. When was the last time you’ve had play time with your kids or grandkids? When I looked through all the pictures for the harvest contest it was awesome to see so many kids in the pictures helping out, but likely mostly playing. This weekend at the World Waterpark in West Edmonton Mall the kids and I were playing hide and go seek tag and it was a blast. Now we almost got kicked out a few times for running but I think that’s part of it. Its unquantifiable how much fun just forgetting your list of to-dos and worries and just playing is. Now there is a distinct difference between playing and watching people play or asking the kids to go play. Truly playing usually means being active, engaged and uncomfortable which sounds a lot like doing a workout but usually I feel a lot better after those as well. I’m trying to set more play time with my kids and not just when its Daddy Weekend. I know it doesn’t need to be long or complicated but just set aside your adult stuff and think like a kid for a few minutes. It’ll do your heart good.

Market Report – by Nelson Neumann

Barley : We saw the feed barley market strengthen the tail end of last week. Feed Barley prices jumped to $225/MT (~$4.90/bushel) up $10/MT ($0.22/bushel) delivered into Lethbridge. There were also reports of barley landing over $230/MT. The harvest prolonged harvest pressure that was drawn out appears to be finally over. Earlier in September with the price below $200 the buyer was content to watch it drop and the seller’s bin doors remained closed. The buyer has been coming to the table and the seller is selling. The wet conditions have led to a lot of tough grain which needs to be blended with dry barley. Because of this despite their being lots of barley the useable supply is limited currently. Any barley still in the field is mostly written off to being spring threshed. This looming influx of supply may dampen the usual spring/road ban price increases. Even though we saw a rally, buyers are snapping up lots of grain at these prices and I wouldn’t expect feed barley to go to the moon. One last factor boosting pricing is freight out of Saskatchewan. It has been difficult to get competitive rates preventing some already bought grain to deliver.

Wheat: Feed grade wheat has not latched on to feed barley and is holding steady. There is an oversaturation of feed wheat in the market and quick movement opportunities are scarce. Lots of the wheat is also high moisture which there are even more limited homes for. The based dry price is lower than with steep moisture discounts tacked on top of it. Milling wheat has been trading relatively sideways with the basis ranging from $20-$37 under the futures depending on location. Excellent #1 Durum bids are still holding strong although movement timeframe is beginning to be pushed further back.

Peas : Yellow peas saw some signs of harvest pressure finally being over as well. Delivered bids climbed to as high as $6.50 in some locations in Alberta. Green Peas are also seeing a cash price rally largely on the back of poor quality. Greens are more fickle and with the poor weather more are being downgraded and the supply on quality #2’s tightening.

Canola : Canola is hovering between $451 and $455 at the time of writing. Lots of Canola unfortunately is stranded out in the field still which should in theory spark an increase in cash prices. However, there is simply not enough export demand with the ongoing Chinese trade war. A phase one agreement between the American’s and Chinese is supposedly close to being completed, but it is still quite unclear where that leaves Canadian Ag products.

Oats : Similar to Canola oats are usually one of the later crops to come off and there are still sadly oats buried in snow. The market accounted for this risk weeks ago with increased pricing then. For Albertan’s with milling quality movement is being pushed into 2020 with buyers covering their needs for November/December already. Feed oats are less prone to moisture concerns then barley and especially wheat. We are not seeing the same level of discounts on tough oats but also not the increased price for dry feed.

Buyer Brief –   by Sandra Correia-Letendre

The market is back in action! Buyers are buying, sellers are selling. The time has hit where buyers now need the grain and can no longer hold off waiting for prices to drop. They are looking for bigger tonnage offers and trying to make trades work. Trucking has been a challenge for moving grain in Saskatchewan, this has pushed some buyers to get some immediate grain from Alberta. Prices for feed grains have therefore been increasing the last two weeks. We saw barley trading here yesterday at it’s highest for the season at $230/mt delivered Lethbridge.
From what we are hearing from some of our producers, harvest is pretty much done and those who haven’t completed will probably be leaving it on the field until spring. This has been an issue for some buyers, as contracts aren’t being fulfilled for the movement time they were contracted for. There has also been a lot of high moisture grain this year. We are seeing up to 25% moisture. Dry barley supply has been low and is getting premiums for farmers that have it. With all this in play, will the market continue going up or has it reached its plateau for feed grains for this season?
Seller’s Tip: If you have any barley or wheat with high moisture, we have been trading it!

We’d be happy to market any of your grain. 1-888-969-5552.
