What Are You Waiting For?

I have 3 kids Hannah (12), Truett (7), and Samuel (6). Hannah and Truett have been going to camp for the past few days. It’s a local summer camp in our community and the camp goes from 10am – 8pm. There is an obstacle course, woodworking, crafts, music and, also lunch and supper. Hannah is absolutely loving it but it’s a really long day for Truett. One of the workers called us yesterday and said that Truett is absolutely beat and that it’s a lot for the 7-year-olds, could we come and hang out with him or pick him up. This was an hour before it was over. I said, “sure, that’s no problem, I’ll be right over.” As advertised, Truett and the other 7-year-olds were hanging out together not at all interested in the main event, they all looked totally wiped. I asked True how his day went and he said “really good, it was fun” I asked him if he wanted to stay or hang out with me for a bit, he said “let’s hang out, I’ve been really busy”. We hop in the truck and I ask him one of the most important questions a father can ask a son, “Do you want to get some ice cream?” Truett says “Sure, let’s do that!” Now I get to the rub and the point of my little story. True then asks, “What are we gonna do after that?” Now just to keep it in context it’s 7:30 at night typically Truett’s bedtime, after day 2 of these super long action-packed days and we’re on our way to get ice cream. Pretty much the greatest conclusion to any summer day and he wants to know what we’re doing after that. Now I will say that his response to my “well buddy, we’re gonna eat our ice cream with mommy and Samuel then you’re going to bed” didn’t elicit the frustration it typically does but he was definitely deflated.
 
I find myself often needing to remind my children to enjoy the moment, and the current experience, and not to worry about what we’re doing next. I have the same challenge from time to time in my life, where rather than celebrating a win or achievement I begin to fixate on the next day’s tasks and rewards. I usually remind my kids and myself of the line from Star Wars (Empire Strikes Back) where Yoda is talking to Obi Wan Kenobi and Luke and says “This one a long time I watched. All his life has he looked away … to the horizon. Never his mind on where he was. Hmm? What he was doing. Hmph. Adventure. Heh. Excitement. Heh. A Jedi craves not these things.” Why is it so challenging for us to be still and wait?
 
I know right now, farmers are waiting for their crops to mature and watching the weather in anxious anticipation; however, after the spraying is done and the hay is cut there is a moment to just wait. It’s the same for the buyers. Demand has subsided and feedlots and feed mills are watching new crop pricing for harvest, many of us are waiting. What is our mental state when we wait? Are we missing out on the 1-2 nice days of summer with our families because we can’t enjoy it as we’re anxiously waiting? We have the same challenge at Agfinity where we are calling you, our customers, working to help you clean out the bins and helping you book new crop prices, but are we doing this frantically or could we relax take a breath and enjoy the pace of summer and take it easy? We’re all waiting for harvest but how we wait matters. If we can’t enjoy the summer now, then all we end up doing is longing for it again next winter saying we’ll do better next year.

Barley: The feed barley market has been sliding and the outlook for the remainder of the crop year is bearish. That being said, the markets are still quite high and quite a few people would be happy if at the beginning of the year were told they could get today’s pricing. With the price still being high buyers feel they can wait it out till new crop comes off, which is rapidly approaching in southern Alberta. New crop levels are also relatively high compared to years past with the market around $5 delivered into the Lethbridge area.

Pea: Both green and yellow peas old crop bids are few and far between especially on greens. With pea acres estimated to be up 20% (35% increase year over year for green) buyers are waiting for new crop to come off. Yellow bids around $6.50-$6.75 delivered depending on location.

Canola: Canola has been trading relatively sideways with a slight downwards trend. Rains across most of the prairies have put some downwards pressure on November Canola. The rain was much needed and salvaged many crops, although in many places it is still a little rough. On the geopolitical front there is still no news to report from trade tensions with China. A recent report stated China’s GDP was at a low for the past quarter century.

Wheat: Last year many of the global players such as Australia and Central Europe’s wheat crop significantly suffered. This year most these same producing countries appear to be on pace. Despite that the new crop pricing is similar to this time last year. Two wild cards to watch are Russia’s what production as well as possible tariffs coming in from China. A disappointing Russian/Ukrainian wheat crop would certainly help pricing, while Chinese tariffs could seriously weaken local cash bids.

Oats: In most of the other commodities we are seeing the old crop price converge down into the new crop number. Old crop oats both feed and milling are resisting that urge and remain strong. #2CW Oats have bids slightly over $4.00 into Southern Alberta. Buyers are eagerly awaiting American oats to come off.

Is it still a seller’s market?  With the rain we have finally received in Western Canada, most crops are looking good.  The market has therefore softened, and buyers’ bids have lowered, especially for Barley and Wheat which were on high demand for weeks.  Sellers don’t seem to be accepting of this reality and many are staying firm at last weeks price when the market was higher.  This has slowed trading down.  We are so close to harvest that this is quite the risk the seller is taking if they are needing to empty their bins to make room for new crop.
New crop barley and wheat pricing is holding steady at strong numbers.  This is a good time for sellers to sell.  Some sellers have received too much rain or hail which has made them hesitate to sell.  If they need fall movement, locking in a profitable level now even for part of their loads, might prove wise.
Seller’s Tip:  The market may have softened but prices are still great value for your grain.  New Crop will be coming off soon and we are on the clock for how long these good prices may last.
