Market Report – by Nelson Neumann
Barley: Feed barley prices continue to trend downwards, and the market has reached the level it was at this time last year. New crop is landing into feedlot alley between $220 and $223/MT for September and October delivery. Wet weather and lower yields in southern Alberta is helping old crop barley hold its value as well as offering premiums for new crop that is able to deliver in August. As the better yielding central Alberta regions start turning wheels expect these quick movement premiums to evaporate.
Peas: Its shaping up to be another grinder year in the pulse market. Yellow pea acres were up 20% from last year and there hasn’t been any good news coming out of the export market. Fall yellow pea pricing around $6.00 picked up at the bin in many areas.
Canola: The Canola price is heavily tied to the soybean market which has been fluctuating with the news cycle. We seem to be in a loop of the market selling off on no progress being made with China, then picking up hints of optimism and the market rallying expecting a resolution only to be back to no progress being made and selling off again. Some would say that Trump does appear to show signs of caving as the US economy is showing clear signs of an upcoming recession. Keeping it in our own backyard; the cooler weather is bringing about talk of frost premiums. Frost has been forecast in the northern Alberta Peace Region already.
Wheat: The wheat markets cooled off following Monday’s WASDE report. This report hammered corn prices as well as upgraded American yield estimates. Overall there is expected to be more wheat exports globally and a slight decline out of Canada. As with Canola early frost premiums are worth watching for.
Oats: Old steady oats continue to hold it’s own in the marketplace. $3.00 at the bin for milling oats is available in all but northern Alberta. Both old crop feed and milling oats have retained their value as we approach harvest. If you are sitting on oats still pricing for quick movement may prove wise.
Buyer Brief – by Sandra Correia-Letendre
- Depending on which part of Alberta farmers are located, fields have been very wet. This making it hard to get into yards for old crop. We’ve also been hearing from some areas that yields will be lower due to excessive water and hail damage. Combining has been delayed for some of these fields until it gets dryer. Lac St. Anne farmers even declared a state of emergency
- Other parts of the province, more south, some farmers are expecting lower yields due to a dry spring.
- This week many were anxiously awaiting the USDA report that came out. In summary, it stated that corn yields were looking much better than originally expected. We saw a .10/bu decrease almost immediately on feed grain. Above delays are supporting old crop prices for quick movement.
Seller’s Tip: As soon as combining really gets going (in the next couple weeks) we expect to see old crop wheat and barley prices drop significantly. Let’s make room for new crop and get a good number for old crop now. Call us at 1-888-969-5552 to help you market your grain.
