The Anticipation

Most of Alberta is not in full swing for harvest yet. The weather, of course, is playing the biggest part in this delay. Each week we are anxiously waiting, “what will the weather be”. Last week was wet and cold for the most part. It even snowed in most of southern Alberta… really snow already!? When will things turn around, so we get harvest done? The anticipation reminds me of Christmas. We can’t wait until that day. We do so much preparation and just hope that day holds all the things we are hoping for. It’s also such a relief after it’s over. Buyers would be the kids waiting for gifts at Christmas –what will it look like, how much will I get, etc. Farmers are like parents, doing their best to get the most wanted gifts (grow the best grain). This symbolism makes me smile instead of focusing on all the stress and frustration many feel with the delay of harvest.

The good news is that we are seeing a break in weather across many areas of Alberta for the next week. Christmas for our industry may be here soon, lol. Hoping crops come out looking as great as can be for our farmers and that we all have a great trading season.  In the meantime, you may want to start thinking about Christmas as it is only a few months away and always comes faster than we expect. I’ve even seen some Christmas stock out and ready for sale in a few stores (maybe a bit crazy). Regardless all the best with harvest and looking forward to the Christmas season.

Canola Premiums (For this year) – Last year Canola targets we’re getting close to $12/bu this year we’re chasing $10/bu. We are seeing stronger basis levels from some buyers hunting to cover their near by positions. This is not the case at all locations but give us a call and we can put your Canola out there to see the premium is available.
Canola School: Harvesting Snow Bound and Frozen Canola

Feed Barley: As Southern Alberta and Saskatchewan dig themselves out of the snow and cold and northern areas wait for the ground to be dry enough to get combines rolling. The only silver lining is as corn prices push slightly higher; Alberta feedlots may find a bottom to barley prices. There are a few potential reasons to see the bleeding stop. First likely export demand from China (Beer), dropping temperatures make animals hungrier all that to say that we may see slow bid recovery late fall and winter. PLEASE NOTE WE SAID RECOVERY NOT RALLY.
