If your family is anything like mine then one topic that may often be brought up, especially these days, is where do we plan to travel next when things finally become open and safe to do so? There are so many options with pros and cons which can make the choosing a bit overwhelming but me for the answer is simple, it is Nova Scotia.
I grew up in Nova Scotia and have had the privilege of seeing and experiencing the many beautiful things it has to offer, from the fresh delicious seafood to the great maritime music, my favorite maritime musician being Alan Doyle who is mostly known for his writing in the band Great Big Sea which originates from Newfoundland and Labrador.
Some of the places I most enjoy visiting when I am back home are:
- Peggy’s Cove (and any other nearby coves)
- Halifax
- Lunenburg
- Pictou
- Five Islands
My absolute favorite place that I still go to visit each year I go back is the Cabot Trail. This destination is not so much of a place that you would stop to go walk around when you get there but more of a long scenic drive all the way through, so if you decide to make this trip be prepared for a journey, especially depending on where you must drive from! For me I always begin the trip in the town of Truro (where I was born) and that ends up being a whole day trip (8-10 hours).
This route beings low along the coastline of Cape Breton Island giving you a great view of the water as you meander along, and it continues to climb higher up the hillside to the top which is known as the Cape Brenton Highlands National Park.
While most of this journey is driven there are still lots of nice look out spots you can pull over at while you are driving to get a great view of your surroundings, so if you decide to take this trip (which I highly recommend) do not pass up the opportunity to stop at as many of these spots as you can and take plenty of pictures!
To this day the Cabot Trail is still one of my favorite places to go visit after countless times of driving through there, and I will continue with this tradition for as long as I can.
