I was doing some thinking on this and came up with this definition: A group of individuals that bring separate gifts and abilities together to achieve a common goal while living the core values of the organization. I think this comes up for me every year before spring break when Jared and I leave with our families for a week. For me, this is a great test to see how the team does without us in the office. Nelson, Erin, Clayton and Sandra have exemplified what teamwork looks like.
Our environment for teamwork is quite unique because it could very easily lend itself to looking out for number one. Our traders are paid commission based on tonnage; however, they can, and do, split their commissions with other traders for many different reasons throughout the day. A senior trader receives some commission for any trade done in their area, as well, the trader that posts an offer may not be the one that takes the bids to the producer or builds the broker note. This may appear overly complicated, but it allows for greater accountability and consistency. There is a very fine line between too many cooks in the kitchen vs many hands make light work. We’ve found that the louder the trading pit and the more that collaboration takes place, the better everyone does and feels.
Over the years at Agfinity we’ve learned about leadership, more from error than trial, that we must cultivate a team. Strong individuals have come over the years and have been awesome for a season, but as I think about it now, if they are not held accountable to a team, and also are not required to mentor and teach someone as well, eventually that strong individual begins to think that it was “all them” that achieved the goals and hit the sales targets and that they have full reason to think that way. The trap with that is how quickly entitlement and pride set in. It is my belief that by learning how to work and lead in a team environment a larger group of individuals can align as a team to keep each other accountable by using the core values of the organization.

Thanks again for giving us a chance to work as a team, for your team. We truly appreciate it. Here’s to many more muddy springs and dusty (but not too dusty) falls.
