The world is going through some very trying times as a result of this covid-19 pandemic. The words “self isolation” and “social distancing” are now part of our everyday language. We are flooded with negative news on this virus. But is there a silver lining amidst all this? . . . I think so.
Let’s start with looking at what’s come out of us being home bound. Families have been forced to slow down and just focus on quality time together. We are pulling out the old school board games, having more time to play with our kids, making more homemade dinners and baking together, etc. This is strengthening the family unit. Being home bound has also encouraged picking up projects around the house and re-organizing things we never have time for. The home is finally getting more attention.
Most of us are now working from home. This has given us the gift of time; time that we used to commute to and from work. This also means less traffic on the streets which helps reduce pollution. In some parts of the world this is a big deal i.e. Europe.
People are getting out walking, running, biking more than ever before. There seems to be a revived appreciation for the outdoors. This is great for everyone’s health, both physically and mentally. Taking care of our health has now become more of a priority. Many people are trying to be creative with new outdoor activities. My family has found a way to play baseball with 3 people. I don’t remember the last time I played baseball which I think many people are feeling about activities they are starting to do again.
There have also been new ways of being social with distance. You see people talking with their neighbors standing in each of their driveways or groups of people in a parking lot with their lawn chairs 6 feet apart. Creativity has become important during this time not only for new ways to connect. We’ve also been challenged with thinking of new ways to work, teach, and entertain.
This time has also brought to light how equal we all are. Regardless if you are a celebrity, the president or ordinary folk, the virus can get anyone. Actions needed to keep safe are the same for everyone.
All in all, take some time to reflect on some positive outcomes of this pandemic on society to help pull you through. It is great to see the world working together to try and keep each other safe. Let’s continue to each do our part. Be healthy, Be safe.
