Thank You Canadian Farmers!

By May 13, 2020Blog

You can ask Joseph “What gets Amy riled up?” and he will pretty quickly say farming and food production misconceptions! Thanks to media and Hollywood productions like Food, Inc. based on American production practices, our Canadian consumers can become quite disillusioned about how their food is produced. I feel like this rant will wait for another day. Today I want to tout the amazing farmers and production practices we have in Canada.

I am proud to have a heritage based in Canadian farming and I am proud to be working in this industry. Canadian farming and food production practices are held to some of the highest standards in the world. It really comes down to Canadian farmers caring and loving what they do. It’s not just business for each producer, it’s their way of life, their blood, sweat and tears. Generations work the same farm together to produce high quality products for the Canadian food supply chain. It’s a heritage, a tradition!

Especially right now we are sending out huge a thank you to first responders and frontline workers. Well, THANK YOU to all the farmers out there too! Every day you are putting in every ounce of effort to produce the best food for the Canadian population and beyond. From grain to produce to dairy to beef to poultry and pork and so much more, you work tirelessly to produce what we need to not just survive, but to flourish! THANK YOU! Thank you for caring to the point of sleepless nights, bloodied knuckles, and weary backs. Without you, we would be a very ill-fed nation.

As consumers let’s support our farmers by buying local, at the least let’s choose products that are produce in Canada. You can be assured that those products are produced in accordance with the highest standard and by fellow Canadians that truly care. Thank you, Canadian farmers, and keep up the good work!

Remember, we are here to help make you life a bit easier when it comes to marketing your Canadian grain. Give us a call at 1-888-969-5552 and we’ll work to hard to meet your grain marketing needs!

Because Farming is Forever

Market Report – by Nelson Neumann

Barley: The feed market has settled into a $225/mt delivered feedlot alley market. Lot’s of spring threshed grain is available with much of it being good quality. This has given buyer’s plenty of coverage well into June. With energy prices throttled American bio-fuel production has taken a hit and we are seeing corn become an economically viable alternative. Corn landing into Lethbridge at $225/mt as well as barley. Although the price has stabilized, I wouldn’t say that it has troughed as there is still plenty of downside to the market. Speaking to producer’s many are focused on finishing seeding before playing the marketing game on their spring threshed crop, which could lead to another supply surge dropping price further. Price is being supported by pen’s being fuller than buyer’s want with southern Alberta packing plants being either shut down or at half capacity.

Wheat: The big question on feed wheat is if the quality is sufficient to feed hogs. Spring threshed wheat or wheat containing any traces of ergot have softened along with feed barley whereas old crop wheat has largely retained its value. Milling wheat prices have stabilized as well after a tumultuous 2 weeks with many swings. Durum prices have been pretty quiet with many buyers looking for movement sooner rather then later to fill existing orders. On both fronts the prices are currently heavy tied to the weather in key growing regions.

Peas: Pea bids have remained unchanged since the last market report two weeks ago. That’s not bad news though, as prices are at the high of the year. Seeing bids for yellow peas $8.00 delivered in Central Alberta. India recently released an update on their import tariffs and are still not taking yellow pea imports.

Oats: Oat prices have seen some upside in the market with more buying from oat processors south of the border. Buyer’s are particularly looking for sub 13.5% moisture Oats. Any spring threshed oats with excreta in them will need to go for feed. New crop oats bids ranging $2.75 to $3.00 FOB farm depending on location. We triggered a $3.00 FOB pricing target last week.

Canola: Canola prices were drafting behind gains made in the soybean complex but lost some of those gains after increased tensions behind America and China. Right when we thought we were almost past this, accusations over Covid-19 coverup’s has tensions high yet again. Acreage estimates from stats Canada have Canola ever so slightly down from last year. Buyer Brief – by Sandra Correia-Letendre

The further we get into May the further we get into seeding. There has been quite a bit of progress over the last couple weeks. We have been hearing that southern Alberta is close to being done. This goes for harvesting as well. A lot more spring threshed has been coming to the market this week and buyers are buying. For Spring Threshed Barley and Wheat, bids are coming in approximately $5/mt lower than Old Crop bids. Feed Barley bids are still holding on at $225/mt delivered to Lethbridge for May/June. Feed Wheat is still at $230/mt delivered Lethbridge for May/June. Buyers are paying premiums on Feed Wheat (approximately $5/mt) if it’s dry or to hog specs. We think with the price of corn at $225/mt into Lethbridge these feed bids will probably not be going much higher.

Still the biggest issue on the minds of Feedlots is when the meat packing plants are going to get back to full capacity or close to. Cargill, High River, is going at 50% capacity and JBS in Brooks is at about 40%. This has forced feedlots to continue feeding hand to mouth. The plants are trying to bring production back slowly but are keeping safety their number one priority. “From an employee standpoint, when we can’t do it safely, human safe or food safe, we’re just not going to do it,” said Jarrod Gillig, vice-president of operations for Cargill. “The number one asset we have truly is, or are, the folks that work in the plant every day.” (Western Producer May 8, 2020). This has feedlots and grain companies needing to fill short demand which is supporting the price of feed barley today.

Seller’s Tip: Spring Threshed is seeing strong pricing right now. Don’t wait to market, call us to now 1-888-969-5552.
