The sun is shining, and it is much easier to feel its warmth now adays! Heck, we are actually in the month where spring becomes spring officially! I know, in the prairies we can’t necessarily count on spring truly appearing on schedule in March like the calendar says, but there is always hope!
With spring, whenever it decides to grace us with its presence, comes melting snow, running water, soft ground and muddy puddles. Now, if you are six and have on your new rubber boots this sounds like heaven on Earth. Well, actually, for some of us of a more mature age, it is pretty near to that as well! However, the soft ground, flowing water and muddy puddles can present some pretty big challenges! I’m writing from the logistics side of things. I’m sure many will understand and agree, any time you want to move equipment around at this time of year things can get pretty dicey! Many a farmer and trucker can relate to being sunk up to their axles in the muddy soup of spring breakup. We can all agree that that situation is not desirable for anyone and can cost a lot of money in waiting times, delayed loads and damage to equipment, forget about the cost to nerves and sanity!
Now, in an ideal and utterly perfect world everyone would have grain stored in bins that are on nice solid and dry pads and yards that are accessible 365 days a year. But come on, we all know that world is a daydream! At this time of year, we work hard to help everyone with springtime contracts move their grain at the right moments to minimize these headaches and get things moved in the contracted timelines. Anyone that lived through 2019 in many areas of Alberta understands that that isn’t always a possibility. Nature has its own plans! If you have contracts booked for movement for the next couple of months keep in touch. Let us know how your yard is looking so that we can help minimize movement issues and delivery delays. There are always ways to manage the spring breakup nightmares, and I can guarantee you we’ve heard or seen more than our fair share of the sensible ones and even those extreme ones from far out in left field!
Many of you have a lot of work to do even getting last fall’s crops off the field even before getting right back out there to seed this spring. If you can before that time, take a moment to put on your rubber boots and act like a six-year-old playing in those muddy puddles. Then, when you’ve absorbed some warm spring sunshine, give us a call and let us help you with your grain movement dilemmas. And, as always, our traders are here to help you market your grain, whether it is crop from 2019, spring threshed or new crop for 2020, give us a call!

Market Report – by Nelson Neumann
Barley: The air is getting let out of the feed barley balloon slowly and steadily. The market has been continuing to soften since the cold snap in mid-January. The market is saturated with lots of feed still available in the bins currently and a looming influx of spring threshed grain come the spring. That has been the story all year and more recently the cattle futures have seen sharp drops and many feeders moving their cattle. This reduced demand with an increased supply has the market poised for a correction and to continue to soften. Despite the gloomy outlook there are still buyers looking for barley in April/May during road ban season. The bids for this timeframe are landing into feedlot alley at $230-$232/mt ($5.00-$5.05/bushel). The feeder cattle futures can be seen below courtesy of barchart.com.
Wheat: Globally commodities and equities saw drastic declines due to the corona virus shaking the confidence of the global economy. Wheat was no exception although on the bright side the damage was minimal relative to equity markets and precious metals. Another bearish factor is the predicted global wheat crop being higher next year, although, at the moment that stands as a prediction with plenty of room for change. Feed wheat has been holding its value well relative to barely. Barley remains the cheaper option and are seeing feed wheat move largely into bio-fuel, hogs and feed mills. Durum has been trading sideways with no increased export demand.
Oats: The typically quite oat market saw some changes recently. New crop prices declined as the Chicago oat futures dropped. This drop was largely due to an increase in seeded acres as well as corona virus concerns. For grain currently in the bins, prices remain steady and am seeing buyers willing to make some targets work for May onward contracts.
Peas: We made it this far without mentioning the rail blockade hampering rail shipments. CN has been reported to be backlogged 10,000 rail cars and this is affecting pea prices. With limited export demand, we are seeing priority put on wheat and canola and many pulse buyers delaying taking in more peas.
Canola: Canola hasn’t escaped either the Corona virus or the rail blockade troubles and has seen the price decline. Although the blockades have been cleared, shipments are backlogged and with domestic crush still operating at 100% local basis are dropping. Palm oil prices are not doing Canola any favors as political conflict between Malaysia a major supplier and India a major buyer drags pricing downwards. The Canola futures chart can be seen below courtesy of www.barchart.com.

Buyer Brief – by Sandra Correia-Letendre
It’s March and the snow is melting. Spring feels like it’s around the corner. This means if sellers need to move their grain before road bans start, time is ticking. Buyers are mostly covered for March, which is why bids have dropped for this month. Overall we have seen Barley and Feed Wheat prices soften over the last week. Barley bids delivered Lethbridge is $225/mt for March. April-June we are seeing Barley delivered Lethbridge at $230/mt. Regardless sellers still seem to be bullish. In talking with a few buyers, they are feeling some frustration seeing where the market is and how high some sellers are posting at. This has made trading a bit of a grind the last couple weeks.
The railway blockade is another issue. It is affecting graded wheat demand. Many Buyers can’t move their graded wheat for exporting until this blockade is over which is backing them up. This protest has already latest longer than I’ve expected. This has affected not only layoffs and lost revenue for CN, but also lost revenue for CN customers which include our buyers. Hopefully we will see resolution sooner than later.
The Coronavirus is all the talk right now globally. We have not yet seen major impacts on the local feed market. Alberta is fortunate to not have it hit here yet. Let’s hope they find a way to contain it so the spreading stops.
Seller’s tip: If you don’t have road bans for April/May, buyers may be willing to pay a bit more to get delivery for these months. Let’s discuss when is the best time to market your grain, call us at 1-888-969-5552 (ext-9)
