On a tractor bound for nowhere

By August 29, 2018Blog

On a cool summer’s evenin’ – on a tractor bound for nowhere,
I met up with the farmer; we were both too tired to sleep. So we took turns a starin’ – out the window, at the darkness, ’til boredom overtook us – and he began to speak…

He said, “Son, I’ve made my life – out of farmin’ people’s places, and knowin’ what their farms were – by the way their crops would rise. So if you don’t mind my sayin’, I can see you’re makin’ faces. For a taste of your cornbread, I’ll give you some advice.”

So I handed him my corncake, and he chewed it up real slowly, then he pulled out’a toothpick, and said, ‘what a night’. And the dark got deathly quiet, and his face lost all expression, said, “If you’re gonna be a farm boy, ya gotta learn to farm it right.

“You got to know when to sow ’em, know how to grow ’em,
know when to spray all day and know when to swath.
You never count your money – when you’re sittin’ in the combine. There’ll be time enough for countin’ – when the crop is off.”

Now ev’ry farmer knows – that the secret to survivin’ –
is knowin’ when to harvest – and knowing when to sleep.
‘Cause ev’ry crop’s a yielder – and ev’ry crop’s a loser,
and the best that you can hope for – is to get all you can reap…

So when he’d finished speakin’, he turned back towards the window, flicked away his toothpick, and faded off to sleep.
And somewhere in the darkness, the farmer he broke even.
But if he’d called Agfinity, he’d had a profit he could keep!

Because Farming is Forever,

Market Report
–
by Nelson Neumann

Barley: Harvest is underway across the province and with that came some downward pressure on the barley market. Seeing feedlot bids down $0.10-$0.15/bu from early August. Despite this, the prices are still strong for this time of year and have some carry into 2019. Despite dry conditions this growing season, feedlot alley is not having any trouble finding grain. American corn is being brought into southern Alberta by rail serving as a cheap, reliable source of feed. This effectively draws a line where barley is no longer cost efficient creating a price ceiling.

Wheat: Milling wheat prices have continued to slouch. The price had gone up under the pretense of Eurasian, Western European, and Australian exporters having substantially smaller yields. While Australia’s drought is still considered severe they did receive rain the past weekend in some key areas. Former Soviet Bloc countries also don’t appear to be running out. Locally, feed wheat bids are quite strong.

Oats: The combines are yet to start rolling for many oats producers in the prairies, although around the Edmonton area, we have heard plan’s of starting by next week. That is the time frame where we can gain some information on yield and quality. Pricing remains stable with #2 bids around $3-$3.10 delivered September-October and $3.10-$3.15 for November-December.

Canola:  Spot canola pricing began to soften like ice cream you took a little too long to eat. A drier summer is leading to an early harvest, and with that, harvest pressure. In addition, there has also been a break out of African swine fever in China, the country’s primary source of animal protein. Combined with American trade scuffles and a rising loonie, soy demand has lessened dragging canola pricing with it.

Peas: Yellow pea pricing has scene a mellow yet promising uptick. Delivered bids in the Calgary area are up from $6.25 to $6.40, despite an influx of supply. China is emerging as an international buyer and may increasingly look to Canada as a seller because of American trade tensions and poor Australian crops. Keeping with international markets the plunging Turkish Lira all but erases them as an export destination. Domestically green pea bids remain around $8.25 delivered.

The Feed Buyer Brief
–
by Joseph Billett

For most off the prairies, harvest is in full swath, and everyday more offers are being shown on

www.Agfinity.com of new crop grain that is now harvested and ready to ship.  W
ith these unseasonably high prices, buyers are having a tough time orienteering this market.  Many buyers are talking of harvest pressure, but we still haven’t seen bins busting and grain spilling into the markets yet. Feedlots in Lethbridge are buying large volumes of corn for coverage out to January or further if possible, landing between $245-250MT. There was a lot less talk about corn and more action this year. Barley levels are still strong, but prices are steadily decreasing for nearby shipment. Buyers are, however, willing to take a price swing for higher volume for Nov-Feb offers.

Wheat has been a ghost market. The buyer is unsure of price and the seller doesn’t know the yield or quality that is going to go in their bin. Buyers are hitting offers for wheat right now, predominantly looking for red wheat.

Sellers take note:  Corn, corn, corn! It’s a lot easier for a buyer to purchase 10,000 MT of corn for the next 5 months in one deal, than multiple negotiations for 1,000 MT of barley or wheat. Let us help be your voice to the buyer, taking your 440 MT into 10,000 MT by joining your offer with other offers all throughout western Canada.  Call 1-888-969-5552 and let Jared(ext 1) or Nelson (ext 3) chase the market and get you the best opportunity!
