This past Family Day, Michelle, the kids and I got to go to our first Edmonton Oil Kings game at Rogers Place. And being accustomed to watching the Oilers lose this past season, the home team’s impressive “W” also felt a bit like a first… Our free/gifted tickets happened to be on the attack-twice side, where the Oil Kings scored all five of their goals in the shutout victory against the Medicine Hat Tigers. Now that’s getting your money’s worth!
Feeling pretty good after the second period, and a crisp $20 bill burning a hole in my pocket, I decided to give in to a lifelong desire and buy my first 50/50 ticket. “$3 gets you one number, two for $5, five for $10, or ten for $20,” the man sporting the 50/50 vest told me. “Well,” I replied, pressing $20 into the palm of his hand, “put me down for the ten best numbers you got, partner.”
Something inside me felt different from that moment on. My numbers looked lucky. I felt lucky. And I was soon convinced… The Rogers Place pucks and sticks had aligned in such lucky fashion, I was going to win half of every other wannabe-gambler’s hard-earned money in the building… 11,227 big ones!!
When the third period started, I was only half-watching. My eyes were glued to the 50/50 screen. ‘When are they going to call my number!?!’ … And then, late in the third, the moment finally happened!! They flashed the number on the screen and the announcer read it aloud, – and… and I didn’t even have to look at my ticket to double check… They were off by a mile…
“Well, I’m glad we were able to put $10 toward Edmonton minor hockey…” I justified, pretending I had not been infatuated by the idea of enriching myself just minutes before. As we walked out of the building, I quietly repented and continued enjoying the rest of the day with my family.
50/50… Half for you, half for me! It’s a great sales pitch. You aren’t really spending your money. You’re supporting a great cause with the added bonus of potentially receiving a big reward. Everybody’s a winner! … At least right up until that one, true number is called.
Though the dangerously similar-looking path to self-fulfillment is always nearby, those who earn the opportunity to truly move forward are those brave enough to take chances, and those wise enough to know when to take them.
Over the past few years, you might even feel like you’ve been farming backwards… Burdened by cash flow demands, unable to be as strategic as you once were. But you know, sometimes moving forward is holding your ground. Preparing for the next push. The next build. The next bumper crop harvest with bin-bursting demand.
And, like a 50/50 ticket, the crops might look just right in June and July, but until that one true number is called, it’s going to take a lot of hope, a lot of faith, and – let’s not kid ourselves – a whole lot of luck!
Market Report – by Nelson Neumann
Barley: Feed Barley bids into the Lethbridge market, where corn continues to be fed and bought, have remained relatively stable over the past weeks. Delivered bids range from $255-260/MT. Further away from feedlot alley, prices have been picking up. Smaller operations looking to secure coverage for roadban season and seeding time when supplies will be tighter. For good, heavy, dry barley $5.00/bushel FOB farm has been possible as far north as the St. Paul area.
Wheat: Milling wheat futures lowered this week and are now approaching a near 10 month low. One reason for the drop is other grain producing regions lowering pricing to secure market position. Feed wheat bids remain healthy with sellers seeing $6.00 FOB Farm as far north as Edmonton area. Durum bids remain nothing to get excited about and have been trading sideways.
Oats: The good news in regards to oats for many producers is that feed oat values are quite high. There is a strong demand for feed oats and, depending on location, are trading at a value on par with what milling oats were trading at this time last year. Tight supply is the major factor driving pricing higher.
Canola: The canola market has continued to struggle. Overall, there is a bearish outlook going forward. Recently, the price fell due to a number of factors, including: reported increased supplies estimates, soybean futures dropping and a stronger Canadian dollar. The closely related soybean futures took a knock as China still has not stepped up and resumed purchasing American beans.
Peas: Not much news in the pea markets. Green peas came down from the highest they have been this year to $12.00 delivered in central Alberta. Yellow peas have been trading sideways again at $7.25 delivered in the same area. The market is currently neutral on yellows with there potentially being an upside further out.
The Feed Buyer Brief – by Joseph Billett
Feedlots and resellers have been actively buying over the past few weeks. Barley seems to be easier to find, but buyers are needing to hit the ask to secure tonnage. Wheat has been difficult to find, not that supply isn’t there, but we feel the producer is holding tight on selling their wheat. Not sure if the reason is price-based or spec-based. Many sellers are waiting to hear back on their wheat’s sample results to be completely sure before selling into the feed market. With these current prices and buyers now focusing on April – May, the premiums for this market may be covered before we see the snow melt (which may be June). Feeders are having a tough time chasing these feed prices and haggling over discount schedules. Southern buyers that are able, still have easy access to corn and will continue to buy into their rations if needed.
Something to think on: Demand is king! If margins are not available over the summer for keeping cattle on feed, they will be sold or shipped south. After April – May tonnage is bought, how much supply will be needed to get to harvest? And will demand support current prices?
