We are not unmindful that some of you are reading this amid great trials and tribulations: … Some of you are fresh from getting your tractor stuck in the mud last week. Some of you have been on a neverending quest for crop insurance freedom; bewildered by the persecution of Harvest 2016 and staggered by the wetness of Spring 2017. You have been the veterans of on-farm suffering…
Continue to work with the belief that unearned suffering is redemptive! Go back to your farms in Grande Prairie, go back to Westlock, go back to Saskatoon, go back to Red Deer, go back to Regina, go back to the wetlands beyond our cities, knowing that somehow this situation can and will change. Let us not wallow in the valley of despair…
We say to you today, our friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, we still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in Canadian agriculture.
We have a dream, that one day, your crop will rise up and live out the true meaning of being a seed!
We have a dream that, one day, on the rolling hills of Stony Plain, the sons of former farmers and the sons of former crop insurance agents will sit down together at the same table, as friends.
We have a dream that every unharvested acre will, one day, find a market where it will not be judged by the color of its kernel, but by the content of its groat, or the oil that’s within it.
We have a dream today.
We have a dream that one day, every valley shall be farmed, every wet, low spot shall be made dry, the rocky acres – made plain, and the crooked passes, thanks in part to automation, made straight.
This is our hope. This is the faith that we will be taking your calls with over the coming weeks. With this faith, we will be able to hew out of the fields of despair – a stone of hope. With this faith, we will be able to transform the discontent of the prairies into a beautiful symphony of seeding equipment.
With this faith, we will be able to work together, farm together, struggle together, get hailed out together, stand up for farmers together, knowing that farming is, indeed, forever.
And if farmers are going to help support our great nation, this must become true!
So, let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of Cochrane, Alberta. Let freedom ring from the flat fields of southern Saskatchewan. Let freedom ring from the soppy-soiled regions of Mayerthorpe and Medicine Hat.

Barley : Feed barley prices remain firm after getting some help from wet weather and loading concerns last week. Targets that land Lethbridge $3.65-$3.70/bu have been getting hit. If you’ve been holding onto your feed barley for spring premiums, don’t miss this opportunity! When the tap turns off, bids are going to disappear!
Wheat: We haven’t been seeing much feed wheat coming to market and this has increased prices by about $5 – $10/mt. Gradable wheat futures jumped up with support from Kansas weather conditions. As grower confidence drops, markets rise! #2CPS wheat bids for new crop are back up! $5.70 – $5.80/bu dlvd. HRS old crop trading above $7/bu dlvd in some places. Great time to get your old crop sold!
NEW CROP STRATEGY: We’ve been setting targets for lower grades. Our thinking… It’s easier to take extra money in the fall if the grade is better, than to risk a large drop if it’s worse!
Oats: Buyers are still filling spaces for good quality 2CW and 3CW oats. Prices have been ranging from $2.60 -2.75/bu picked up depending on your location. Feed oats opportunities have been good lately with prices reflecting higher demand. If you do have some feed oats, we’d recommend marketing them before spring thrashed offers saturate the market later this spring/summer.
Canola: Despite the threat of a large supply of soybeans, old crop canola markets continue to hold with targets of $11.85 – $11.90/bu delivered still getting hit. With the expectation of increased acres, producers should be mostly sold on old crop canola by this point! New crop bids now pushing up toward $11/bu. Consider targets of $11 – $11.25/bu delivered for fall. And if you haven’t priced any, it’s worth noting that holding out for an extra nickel might come back to bite you later on.
Peas: Yellow pea bids for old crop still heard up to $9/bu delivered with not much upside. New crop bids still strong at $8.43/bu delivered for fall, and up to $8.50-8.60 in the winter. Green pea fall bids heard at $8.18/bu delivered for Nov – Jan. Old crop at $8.35-8.43/bu delivered.
NEW CROP STRATEGY: While peas may be a little stronger this next year, if the foreboding fumigation cloud decides to rain this harvest, forward pricing will have been a really smart idea. Think about it!

Looking out my office window, I see dirty roads and brown grass. Could spring have finally come? …It’s a bittersweet win. We need yards to dry up and spring thrashed grain to be harvested. Not to mention, seeding to start, and this weather makes this all happen! So that’s the sweet; the bitter is the muddy yards and missed deliveries, which is what has pushed the market up for the past few weeks.
Just because that inspirational aunt of yours says “you can have it all”, it just is not true! You can’t have beautiful days, dry yards, cold beer on your tailgate and expect buyers to remain desperate. These current prices and demand will turn off soon! Could be today. Could be next week. Buyers are just filling weekly holes. Many didn’t overbuy in hopes that spring thrashed grain would meet those needs, but most of them have grain bought for May-June.
There is still lots to be done and sellers will be busy over the next 6 weeks, but this could very well be the highs that make you look like the coffee shop king. Let me know your thoughts you can reach me on Twitter @JosephBillett .
