It Is What It Is

By April 1, 2020Blog

It is what it is, seems to be a statement that I use often referring to an event or result that is beyond my control or influence. Not so much succumbing to the inevitable but embracing it and riding it out. When it comes to the current state of our lives, businesses, provinces, country and globally it seems to me to be an “it is what it is” scenario. In my lifetime, I have never seen status, money, amount of properties size of family or business not make any difference to how you need to react or treat this pandemic.

With spring break starting last week we usually plan to go to Tofino on Vancouver Island for the week. We’ve been doing it for years and its one of our favorite vacation destinations. The speed and rate of information and statements being put out on March 14 – 15 and the fact that the schools had just been shut down made us think that we should leave earlier with the idea that if we were to be stuck somewhere what better place than on the beach on Vancouver Island. Even as a manager at Agfinity we discussed that we would not accept visitors and to lock the door. If anyone was feeling sick or have someone at home that was sick, they needed to work from home. This was Monday March 16th. One of the traders asked if we should be working from home now, I figured if everyone was comfortable, they could stay at the office. By Friday March 17 everyone was and is set up at home with their workstations.

But back to the story of the Billetts’ spring break. Monday, we decided to leave early, we always drive so that was easy and we rescheduled our hotels which was easy as well. Everything was falling into place, we finished packing up and by 4pm on Tuesday March 17 we were in Jasper. It seemed by the hour things were developing but we thought we could get ahead of it and make it to the Island. The next day we woke up to the news that there was a small blockade on the highway to Tofino by Port Alberni, the RCMP had removed it but it was somewhat troubling. Dedicated to our mission we had breakfast and grabbed a coffee and started on our way to Abbotsford, BC and then the next day we would take the ferry to the island.

Right after grabbing our coffees and fueling up in Jasper, Amy got a notification that one of the hotels in Tofino had shut their doors. So, we pulled over . . . luckily, we were only a few minutes outside of Jasper. We called our hotel in Tofino and they were still open but advising guests to not come. Their thought was that being a small town with limited access to supplies if there was a spread of the virus, they would be unable to meet the needs of and influx of tourists in addition to the locals. It sucks but I get it. Amy and I deliberated in the car while the kids played on their iPads and Penelope snored. We thought through the scenarios if we push through and our hotel closes and we’re scrambling to find a place to stay in a town with all the restaurants closed and what that would look like for us.

We decided to turn around and spent one more night in Jasper. By 8:30p.m. that day on March 18th our hotel had closed and on March 24th BC Ferries was restricted to essential travel only. The kids were sad that we didn’t get to the ocean, but we had an awesome staycation last week. At the end of the day, it is what it is. Now if we had pushed through, I likely would have a much more exciting story for you but luckily Amy’s wisdom won against my recklessness.

Regardless, we’re here, our whole team at Agfinity is safe and sound with nice shirts on top and pajama bottoms below. Fortunately with our website and technology we are uninterrupted in our service to you, maybe it’s a little weird not being able to yell across the room but I’ve compensated by being able to yell at the kids when they get rowdy. Stay healthy and stay safe during these unprecedented times.

Market Report – by Nelson Neumann

Barley: Feed barley has seen the price strengthen recently. The strongest price increase is for May. Sellers are expecting to have to fit in both combining and seeding in May which has many people not wanting to load trucks and tightening supply. Currently I am seeing stronger demand for May/June then July or August. China has also been purchasing western Canadian feed barley, this new source of demand strengthens the price floor which for the past few weeks we have been expecting the barley market to break through. There is talks about corn entering the market from USA after we recently saw corn prices plunge which may put a ceiling on domestic feed prices. Malt barley demand has softened as the restaurant industry remains shut down.

Wheat: Dry feed wheat also continues to remain a hot commodity. We are seeing a significant price difference between dry and even 15.5% moisture feed wheat. The milling market saw a recent upturn on the rumor that China has begun importing ag products. In addition to this, wheat-based products are currently in demand due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Apparently, many people are taking up baking as a hobby! In all seriousness the consumer has been stockpiling products such as flour and pasta.

Peas: As mentioned previously, China re-emerging as a buyer sparked pulse bids higher. In addition, there is also increased interest from India. As a result, yellow pea prices have climbed with bids being heard $7.50 delivered Central Alberta.

Canola: Canola was no exception to the positive news coming out of China. There is now an agreement in place for China (the world’s biggest importer) to once again take shipments of Canadian (world’s largest exporter) Canola. The agreement specified less then 1% foreign material allowable. After shipment stopped Canadian canola stocks reached an all time high in 2019. See the Canola futures below courtesy of www.barchart.com

Oats: The normally steady oat market have seen declines over the past 2 weeks with futures being down ~$0.60/bushel in the past 6 weeks. Many buyers feel they have adequate coverage to last into new crop. There does continue to be pockets of opportunity and having targets in place may prove wise.

Buyer Brief – by Sandra Correia-Letendre

Even with the Coronavirus and stocks down, In the last couple weeks we have been seeing a steady increase in Barley and Feed Wheat prices. Buyers have definitely come to the table hungrier than they have a few weeks prior. In speaking to some buyers, some of this is a result of a few buyers taking short position in the market, needing to fill programs/sale on for May and some feedlots running short. Barley has been trading at $237/mt delivered Lethbridge for April-June. We are seeing Feed Wheat trading at $230-$232/mt delivered Lethbridge for the same time frame. For the most part, the key to getting these prices is that May be included in the delivery window. All and all these have made for a few good weeks of trading.

There still seems to be hesitation on the seller’s end to sell. In a couple of instances, buyers have hit the ask on a few offers and the seller still wanting to see what the market may bring. In my opinion sellers seem to be more concerned that the Coronavirus is going to effect local markets in the weeks to come than buyers. Sellers also seem to be concerned about payment with volatile market conditions in the cattle industry. The reality is there is still a lot of spring threshed to come off and that will definitely increase supply for feed in the next couple months. Spring threshed wheat and barley have also been selling strong in the last couple weeks.

One of our buyers made a good point, “Something to keep our eye on is the price of US corn”. With the falling oil prices causing less demand for corn in ethanol plants, corn prices may decline which could have an effect on barley and wheat feed prices. If corn becomes more affordable then there may be less demand for feed barley/wheat. Let’s hope oil prices start going up, for many reasons (i.e. the Alberta economy).

Seller’s Tip: Bids right now for feed barley and feed wheat are strong to where they have been the last few months. This may not last once buyers get filled up for April/May and spring threshed starts coming off. Call us to discuss options in marketing your grain, 1-888-969-5552.
