Introducing Kyler Tluchak!

By July 22, 2020Blog

Hey readers, my name is Kyler Tluchak (Tah-loo-chuk) and I am one of the newest members to the Agfinity Buyer Relations team. Working alongside Sandra Correia and Joseph Billett, it is my job to communicate with buyers daily on their current grain needs and pricing, checking in on market updates, and helping customers find the best product in a timely manner.

I was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and my family moved to Beaumont, Alberta when I was a few years old. My family that still reside in the Melfort area have been farming for decades and I am proud to now work in the Agriculture industry as they will for years to come. I attended MacEwan University and in 2014, I received my Bachelor of Commerce degree majoring in Strategic and Financial Management. Prior to my start with Agfinity I spent quite a few years in the Oil & Gas industry as well as working in sales for the past four years in the Wine & Spirits industry. I am always up for a chat about Scotch and all the new craft beer we see in the market today!

In July of 2019 I moved to Spruce Grove to be with my girlfriend Jennifer who is a born and raised “Spruce Grovian”. She has shown me all there is to see and know about the Parkland County area. With so many great local restaurants, lakes, walking trails, and amenities, I am happy to now call this home.

When I am not calling buyers and keeping tabs on the latest market updates, in the summer I am out fishing at our family lake lot at Buck Lake, or driving my pride and joy – a 1965 Ford Thunderbird (which I named Lucille). The car was purchased from the original owner with less than 30k miles, the engine has since been rebuilt and is for the time being complete – but as any classic car owner knows, there is always one more thing to work on. Besides my car, I have been collecting and trading guitars since I was a teenager and have amassed a collection of guitars which now requires their own room. One that I am particularly fond of is a 1974 Gibson Howard Roberts Custom in sunburst. Our dog Winnie, an 8-month-old East German Shepard, also keeps me quite busy and you will usually find us at the dog park every odd night or out for a stroll thru Heritage Grove Park.

With COVID-19 changing most of what was our normal every-day life, I think it is important to mention that I was hired and trained virtually. I have an incredible team, none of whom I have actually seen or met face to face in the almost three months I’ve worked with Agfinity. You sometimes forget what used to be a “normal” workday.

In these uncertain times I hope you all stay safe and enjoy the time we get to spend with those close around us. Thanks for taking the time to read this and I look forward to maybe having a chance soon to find you some grain, or just to chat about cars, fishing, or the never-ending rain.

Thank you Dyanna Marquardt for this beautiful summer pic!

Market Report – by Erin Harakal

Barley: The feed barley markets price have been holding steady as we approach new crop in the next few weeks. We are currently seeing old crop barley into Lethbridge at $235-240/mt delivered for July- August movement. New crop barley prices can be seen at $220.00/mt delivered into Lethbridge for September-October movement. Feedlots are starting to make the decision if they should feed corn this coming year or to feed barley and what will be more economical for them as corn starts gearing up to enter Lethbridge. Now might be the time to get rid of your old crop barley if you are needing bin space as we get closer to harvest.

Wheat: Feed wheat prices have been very similar to barley prices as they have been very steady as we get closer to new crop with not too many significant changes to pricing. Feed bids have been seen any where from $5.00-5.80/bu FOB. Graded wheat has really softened as we get closer to new crop with bids being heard around $6.40-6.50/bu delivered based on 13.5% protein.

Oats: Milling oats have been the super star of the old crop pricing as they are still very strong as we approach new crop. This might not last much longer as buyers start to get covered at these levels and they start coming down to new crop levels. Prices for old crop can be seen any where from $4.00-4.20/bu delivered. If you have old crop milling oats left to move now is the time to move them. New crop oat prices have been seen any where from $3.10-3.30/bu delivered for September-October.

Peas: New crop and old crop yellow and green peas pricing has converged a few weeks ago now. For the most part new crop pulses have been looking very strong through out western Canada but in some areas wet conditions are starting to become of a concern especially in areas of Alberta.

Canola: Canola futures have been making have been showing some strength as we approach new crop. Canola for November has been as high as $487/MT. This is great news as we get closer to new crop. Old crop has been as high as $10.70/bu delivered for August in some places still.

Thank you Calvin Miller for a reminder of what is coming very soon!

Buyer Brief – by Sandra Correia-Letendre

As we get closer to mid-summer, new crop season is coming around the corner. Old crop barley prices are surprisingly holding on at $240/mt delivered Lethbridge. This could be due to the continued hand to mouth feeding from feedlots and all the rain Alberta has seen in the last few weeks making it hard to get into some yards to pick up grain. Feed Wheat bids have not changed much in the last week, still ranging between $232-$235/mt delivered Lethbridge for July/Aug. Graded wheat is still seeing low demand.

Most of the trades happening in the last week are old crop or spring threshed wheat, oats and barley. New crop offers are still not being scooped up as fast as they should be at this time of year. Buyers are bearish with the potential of corn coming in from the US at harvest being cheaper to feed than barley. As well sellers have been reluctant to trade high tonnage new crop with all the hail and rain that keeps occurring in many parts of Alberta. This makes for tough trading times. New Crop Barley prices are similar to last week at $220/mt delivered Lethbridge for Sept/Oct. For new crop wheat, the weather from now until harvest is vital to determine the quality and protein levels—hoping the farmers get what they need.

The reality is harvest is a few weeks away and old crop barley will be dropping anytime now. This is a good time for sellers to sell and clean out their bins and still get great prices.

Seller’s tip: We are so close to harvest, lets clean out those bins! We need to make room for new crop. Call us today to help you market both, 1-888-969-5552.
