Growing up on his family farm Ken has been involved in agriculture his entire life. Located near Athabasca, AB the farm has transitioned from cow/calf to primarily a grain operation today. Ken lives only three miles from the main farm and is still involved, along with his dad and brother.
After graduating from Olds College in 2011 Ken worked in the crop input and consultation business for eight years in Westlock, AB and surrounding area. Working with other farmers to produce high yielding and quality grain efficiently and sustainably has always a passion of his and now working with Agfinity he has the opportunity to help producers capture the best value for their grain.

Canola: Export and domestic demand has been strong during harvest and seems likely to continue. Selling has been consistent but may pull back now that harvest is close to complete in western Canada. Canola shipments have been on track even amidst the flood of new product. The amount of new crop canola has weakened the spot market basis levels. Sellers let Agfinity hunt down better pricing opportunities in deferred months. Analysts suggest that 40% of 2020 canola production should be sold and that more canola can be booked deeper into the fall as buyers develop their winter markets. The current delivered spot bids are in the range of $11.20 to $11.50/bu (depending on location) and $11.70 to over $12.00 out into winter/early spring, let us help you find the best opportunity as well as coordinate the freight.

Wheat: Because of a quicker and dryer start to harvest we have seen strong export on wheat in September and continuing into October as well. According to Sask Ag, wheat quality is on track to be the best seen to date. Both Kansas and Russia are experiencing dryness and if this continues their will be a greater demand for winter wheat acres next spring.
Oats: Analysts feel that this year may be an exception to StatsCan rule of typically raising its December Oat estimates, they might not be just trimming a turkey but also the production numbers. Because of the amount of old-crop oat carryover August and September oat exports were lower than expected. Current seasonal oat bids are low but may recover, not to the same extent as other crops.
Peas: Considering the tight old crop supplies, pea exports were a measly 92,000 tonnes in August. Looking at provincial yield numbers, 2020 pea crop may be over the 4.5 million tonnes range this will exceed StatsCan estimates. Pea stocks are higher this year, but the elevator system has not followed suit yet. The US pea market is still sluggish. Even as prices for yellows in China have increased in the last few weeks and bids in Canada continue to rally.
Barley: As we have been saying barley exports continue to be strong and should continue into the nearby. Canadian elevators have been aggressively buying barley, Australia exports have been soft but will begin to gain momentum over the next few months. Malt barley has been lackluster as of late while feed barley has been the hot commodity.

As we approach the half-way mark in October, the temperatures are dropping, leaves are falling, stomachs full of turkey, and harvest 2020 is almost in the books. With reports from last week highlighting 85%+ of major crops harvested, we have started to see our market in a big up-swing as of late. With the northern areas in the late stages of harvest, we should continue to see more grain come to the table in the following weeks.
Barley in recent weeks has been an extremely hot ticket as prices and demand have jumped in most areas of the province. In addition, we have seen OCT-NOV trades tighten up and most movements deferred out into December and January. As of late (but sure to change) picked up barley in Grande Prairie/ Peace areas fetching as high as $188 for OCT, and $195/MT for NOV-DEC. Central AB has seen a spike and around $207-$213/MT for OCT seems to be the average. Movement out into NOV-DEC seeing $217/MT-$219/MT picked up and out into JAN-MAR $227/MT FOB. Moving south of the capital region, a recent rally has driven prices up as high as $230/MT-$235/MT FOB for Calgary and east-border areas for OCT-DEC. All the way south, Lethbridge DLVD continues to move the bar higher as OCT-DEC prices seeing $240/MT-$245/MT.
Wheat thus far has been quiet as feed and gradable have yet to make a big entrance to our market. Feed wheat prices seen so far have ranged from $212/MT-$216/MT FOB in the Grande Prairie/Peace regions to $220/MT in the capital region. Moving south, $233/MT FOB Calgary east and south is expected price point all for OCT- first half NOV movements.
Oats and pulses have slowly made headway in the past weeks with harvested #2CW grade oats in the northern parts of AB fetching around $3.15/BU- $3.25/BU and feed grade around $3.00/BU picked up. Graded peas remain quiet in our market with high moisture an issue, feed grades showing up more are moving around the $6.00/BU mark.
