If you don’t want to hit that tree, aim for it and hit the throttle!

By February 20, 2019Blog

Every Family Day long weekend for quite a few years now, we go on a guy’s weekend snowmobile trip.  Historically, we have sent the women and children up to Dawson Creek to hang out and have a great time and the boys sleep in a converted school bus at Kakwa Lake, British Columbia.  This year there was a change to that plan. I think it had something to do with my pregnant sister-in-law and her husband not wanting to stray too far. I think after spending the guy’s weekend in the house with 7 children, a bulldog puppy, and 3 women and a pregnant lady his tune may change for next year.  I need to be careful here because my other brother-in-law, Jacob, and I borrow sleds from the pregnant lady and my mother-in-law, which is very awesome of them, and I must say – pink and black goes very well with my beard.

I’d love to hear from the snowmobilers out there, but for me, I only go once a year – on this weekend. Every year I seem to be getting a little better and remembering some of the basic principles.  The biggest one is, turn left to go right and then pin it, the old counter steer.  This generally works best in deeper snow but every year it takes a bit to get my head into this counter intuitive thinking.  It is quite funny at first as your speeding through the powder and you see that tree in front of you and to avoid it you need to aim for it and accelerate. I’m sure its physics, but I call it magic as the machine cuts into the snow and goes the opposite direction. Now this sounds easy in theory, but when you’re cruising through the wilderness on your mother-in-law’s pink sled and that tree jumps out onto the trail at you, shit gets real! And the last thing you want to do is aim for the damn tree and go faster!  So, because of this, we start every trip by playing around in an open field, practicing our counter steering.  Now when we don’t quite make it the go to advice from the avid sledders is “you just need to commit and trust the machine.”

As I was sledding this weekend aiming at the trees, I couldn’t help but think of the comparison to this and grain markets.  The goal in markets is to sell into the highs and hold when the market is dropping. Just like counter steering, this is easier said than done.  Typically, we sell after the market has hit the high and is dropping, and this drop accelerates when everyone else is selling at the same time.  As brokers, most grain gets traded in a downward market and sellers are holding tight on an upward market.  I know this isn’t you, you read every report and listen to the counsel of your market coach as faithfully as the voice of God himself. For the rest of us, it’s tough to counter steer in these markets, and none of us want to be the person selling too soon and being shamed at the coffee shop.  Proper grain marketing employs counter intuitive thinking.

We have no idea how much higher this market will go. There are so many factors feeding the bull right now; however, I think we can all agree that these are historically high markets, especially when you talk new crop.  This might be good time to start thinking counter-intuitively and we’d love to help you aim for the tree and hit the throttle.
