Farming The Anti-Einstein Way

By May 17, 2017Blog

I took a sick day yesterday… Hated every minute of it! And not just because my throat and ears were hurting… I hated the feeling of idleness nagging at my soul all day!

As much as we want to “let freedom ring”, people were created to work. To grind… sweat… and ultimately, overcome! … And then do it again tomorrow!!

Most farmers’ kids are raised this way.  In fact, I’m quite sure pop-diva, Rihanna, was referring to farmers when she sang, “Work, work, work, work, work, work. You see me I be work, work, work, work, work, work. You see me do me dirt, dirt, dirt, dirt, dirt, dirt. There’s something ’bout that work, work, work, work, work, work…

…You know how Grandpa and Great Uncle Wayne have so much energy, and to this day are still helping around the farm!? … It’s because life – yields more life! When you put in a good day’s work, and feel too exhilarated to sleep at night, even though you’re ridiculously tired – there’s a natural high at work, feeding your soul.

Einstein insisted that “energy can neither be created nor destroyed; rather, it transforms from one form to another.”

Regarding people, my theory is different… I believe when we expend our energy, new fuel is created! Somewhat magically… Now, if only this theory could happen with actual fuel, farmers would have one less bill to pay, and one less truck coming into the yard!

Food for today; energy for tomorrow
… Hey! That would make a good slogan! If you’re thinking about starting an agribusiness, just make sure you acknowledge us if you make it big!

…Feeding the world… Feeding your cows… Feeding your soul… You guys really are feeding everything! … Which is why our goal – is to help feed your bank account!!

Market Report

 – Tracy Green

Barley
: With feedlots looking for quick movement the feed barley market rallied these last couple weeks.  Speculation that feedlots will hang onto cattle has helped maintain strong pricing through the summer.   Buyers are bidding on spring thrashed barley at about 25 cents per bushel less, depending on quality.  Buyers will want to know the bushel weight, moisture, level of excreta and will want to see a picture.

Wheat: Not a lot of action in the gradable wheat market.   Weather in the US has not been ideal but the extent of the damage is still a question mark.  More rain is in the forecast bringing concern for yield and the potential for disease.   Feed wheat prices have come up in the past few weeks for good quality (fall harvested) wheat.  Spring thrashed opportunities also available and prices reflect quality.  Buyers are interested but will want to know level of excreta, weight and moisture and will want to see a picture as well.

Oats: Demand to get the mills through summer has given us some good opportunities for 2CW and 3CW oats for old crop. Bids now up to $2.75 – $3.05/bu picked up depending on your location.  This is a good time to take advantage of new crop pricing as well with bids for milling quality oats at $2.85 – $2.96 delivered for fall.  Feed oats still at similar levels.  If you have spring thrashed oats, give us a call with your specs and we will shop around to see if we can find a home for you.

Canola: Weather has been the biggest news factor for canola. Soy plantings are in and acres are anticipated to exceed corn crop this year;  this could make for a bearish canola market. Central to Southern Alberta is about 50% done seeding; however, Edmonton area and north, producers are being kept out of the fields due to rain. The story is similar in Saskatchewan.  Overall, we haven’t seen any major changes in the market; pricing has been holding.

Peas: Old crop bids for green peas have been holding flat at about $8.40-8.45/bu delivered and new crop is hanging in at $8.50-8.60/bu dlvd without AOG, about 25 cents/bu less with an AOG.
Yellow peas have demand for old crop as they’ve been difficult to find.  Bids up to $9.93/bu+ delivered.   New crop yellows at about $8.50/bu dlvd.  Weather concerns should lead to higher bids for yellows for fall.  India’s pulse crop is about 40% bigger this year; they’re waiting for monsoon season to pass to see what they’ll do.

The Buyer Brief
–
by Joseph Billett

The difficult loading season has extended well into May, and markets have taken notice. Feed markets are being supplemented by spring thrashed grain, but the appetite for good, heavy, fall-thrashed barley has been fed by the anticipation of consistent demand through the summer. Once feed grain buyers feel they have a good position for June and July, expect pricing to peel back.
The opportunity is now! Agree…? Disagree…? Let me know your thoughts!

We have not been receiving many calls about Spring Thrashed Grain around La Crete / Fort Vermilion area, but if you have some or are expecting to have some, please give us a call, or email Jared@Agfinity.com with your sample info / pictures.
