This weekend Alberta is one of the fortunate provinces that got to celebrate Family Day. It is a day that was originally created to give people time to spend with their families. This is not a national stat holiday; in case you were wondering. I’m not sure why this isn’t a holiday for all provinces. I believe the importance of family should be celebrated by everyone.
Family Day was declared in 1990 by Don Getty, Alberta premier at the time. For the past 30 years many events and festivals have been created for Family Day. Some of the popular activities on this day are skating, playing hockey, board games, puzzles, etc.
This year for its 30th anniversary, Edmonton City Hall had to cancel their outdoor skate and marshmallow roast due to cold weather conditions. They did; however, have a few indoor activities that were great! From noon to four there was the Alberta musical theatre performance of Sleeping Beauty, Blaze in day musical duo, a magician, tours, etc. Other events you could take in in the city was the Silver Skate Festival at Hawrelak Park, Ice Castles, Wildfire festivals, Family Day at the zoo, etc. Lots of choices to make the most out of spending a special day with loved ones and some of these are even free to attend.
One if our favorite activities is going to the Ice Castles in Hawrelak Park. If you haven’t been you must go. The detail and level of creativity is captivating. They even have a double slide for all to use. We have gone in the day and the evening when they have all the lights on shining through the ice sculptures. We’ve attended for three years and enjoy it every time. They have mini fires to warm you up and hot chocolate to purchase. The best part is that it’s an activity that is fun for parents and kids.
Even though this day is to be all about fun, let us not forget the message it promotes which is the importance of families and family values. Hope you did something special with your Family Day and look forward to next year’s. I will leave you with a quote from past Alberta Premier Don Getty, “Family is the basic and most important social institution. From the families of the first indigenous Peoples, to intrepid settlers, through war and depression, family has kept people together and resilient. We can thank our families for many of our blessings, and for instilling strong values in us.”

Market Report – by Nelson Neumann
Barley: Feed barley bids continue to soften as buyers are covered for February March delivery. Covered is phrasing it gently, saturated would more aptly describe the situation. Focus shifting to April/May where road bans and trouble accessing yard during breakup bottlenecks supply. For that timeframe bids are heard around $230/mt into feedlot alley in Southern Alberta. We have also started to forward contract new crop for September October as well as Spring Threshed for May. New Crop levels heard between $205-$210/mt and spring threshed for May at $225 based it being full weight and dry. Booking in some new crop may not be a bad idea, as in my opinion the market may trade flat over the summer putting pressure on new crop levels.
Wheat: Milling wheat prices were under pressure over the past two weeks as well. The Corona Virus continues to cause uncertainty in the global commodity markets. Reports are mixed with some saying the infection rate has stabilized and other’s claiming that the Chinese government is censoring the real statistics. Despite feed barley’s decline feed wheat is holding it’s values relatively well. Feed lot’s see barley as the cheaper alternative. Much of the feed wheat available is tough, and if it is dry growers are continuing to try and blend it into milling markets.
Oats: Steady as ever the oat market has held firm. Prices are comparatively strong to years pst with quality concerns due to harvest conditions, especially moisture. Feed Oats have also seen solid demand with >$3.00 available FOB farm in the southern portions of the oat growing regions.
Canola: Canola hasn’t jumped or dropped but rather continues to trade sideways. Domestic crush is operating at near 100% capacity with above average margins. The Cornavirus compounded the issue of getting canola into China with political blockades still in place. See the March Canola Futures chart below courtesy of barchart.com.
Peas: Pea prices both green and yellow have jolted downwards. Like all other commodities the corona virus has drastically reduced buying into China, who with India out of the market is the major player. Speaking of India, them coming back to the market is what is needed to elevate pulse prices which has been the case for 2 calendar years at this point.
Thank you Frank Shufletoski for this great harvest photo!
Buyer Brief – by Joseph Billett
We can’t help but feel like Chicken Little every time we talk to farmers in this market, we say that the price is falling. There are fewer and fewer March opportunities available and for the ones that are left the price is not very attractive. Feedlots have March mostly buttoned up and are looking to cover April – May now to be long for spring breakup, harvest and seeding this year. As tempting as the possibility of spring threshed grain is to the feedlots the risk of poor quality and availability outweigh the benefits for some. We still have opportunities for Spring Threshed feed grains. The needs of the seller seem to be butting heads with the wants and demand of the buyer right now. Buyers prices has been slowly declining along with the timeframe which continues to get pushed further out to April – May now.
Buyers are paying a premium for under 14% moisture Feed Wheat to offset the glut of higher moisture wheat they’ve already bought and constantly get shown. Agfinity is currently doing a study on the likelihood of falling numbers and bids increasing with the repeated testing of the same #2 CRWS 12.5 Pro, with a 250 falling number, results do not look promising. In all seriousness, under 280 – 300 falling number wheat this year likely needs to go into a feed mill, feedlot market especially if it has higher moisture. Spring is just around the corner, let us help you find the best opportunities for you grain before the options are severely limited.
