Don’t Knock it Until You’ve Tried It . . .

By August 19, 2020Blog

I was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. My family and I just got back from our annual road trip there. We had a great time. It got me thinking about Winnipeg and its bad rap. There are so many great things about Winnipeg I want people to know.

First off is the people. Overall, you will find friendly down to earth people. Hence the “friendly Manitoba” slogan that has also been adopted to Winnipeg. I have met my greatest friends there and my extended family lives there so maybe I am a bit biased, lol.

The summer has got to be some of the best in the country. It is hot, usually high 20’s- low 30’s degrees Celsius and sunny. This comes with nice beaches not too far from city limits. Grand Beach, Winnipeg Beach and Gimli are a couple hot spots for beaches. We spent a good portion of our vacation visiting these sites. They all have white sand and great boardwalks.

The city is also known for the wide variety of local restaurants. Along with great patios. Some of my favorites are Clementine, Wasabi, 529 Wellington and, for something sweet, Baked Expectations. There is such a range of cultures you can find just about any type of food you fancy.

Another great place for food and shopping is The Forks. It is located where the Red and Assiniboine river meet. Thousands of years ago this was a meeting place for settlers to trade their goods. Approximately 30 years ago it was transformed from a rail yard into a year-round open market with restaurants and unique boutiques. Many big events are held here, dragon boat races, Canada Day, concerts etc.

Not too far from The Forks is the city’s biggest and best park, Assiniboine park or as locals may call it City Park. The park covers 1100 acres and houses the city Zoo, Conservatory, Outdoor Theatre, play structures and tons of fields to play sports, etc. It is extra special to me as I had my wedding reception there at the cutest restaurant on Canada day with a Shawn Desman concert going on outside.

One of the biggest cultural events in the world is held in Winnipeg, Folklorama Festival. Every August for 2 weeks, there are approximately 40 pavilions representing cultures from all over the world. I love this festival, you get to sample food, see performances and learn about the different heritages. Wikipedia’s definition for Folklorama, “is an event that runs for 2 weeks each August in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Visitors to the festival are invited to sample cuisine and celebrate the cultural and ethnic heritage of people from dozens of cultures who have made Winnipeg their home. Folklorama is the world’s largest and longest-running multicultural festival”. There are over 400 000 people that attend this event.

Another one if Winnipeg’s gem’s that I like to visit when I can, is the “Ten Spa”. I have tried a few of their services but by far am obsessed with the “Hamam” (which is my main reason for going there). The spa itself is beautiful and they have refreshments for you and a great place to lounge after your service. When you leave after experiencing the hamam (Turkish bath), it feels like you went to heaven. It is a must!

These are just a few things about Winnipeg you may have not known. Hope this has enlighten you to my home city or maybe even gotten you excited to visit. So, don’t knock it until you’ve tried it. I’ll leave you with a little tid-bit. What is Winnie-the -Pooh named after? . . . you bet, Winnipeg!

Market Report – by Erin Harakal

Barley: The feed barley markets price have been sliding as we get closer to new crop. We have been seeing old crop and new crop prices conjoining. Bids have been seen around $203-205/mt delivered Lethbridge for old crop and new crop for September-October. If you are needing to book new crop for bin space now is the time to book it in before harvest pressure effects prices.

Wheat: Feed wheat prices have been dropping as we get closer to new crop. We have been seeing feed wheat around $210/mt delivered into Lethbridge. Graded wheat has really softened as we get closer to new crop with buyers waiting for new crop coming here in the fall.

Oats: Old crop and new crop milling oats prices have conjoined with bids being seen any where from $3.20-3.40/bu delivered. When it comes to feed oats it seems most homes have been covered for the next little bit as we get closer to new crop.

Peas: New crop and old crop yellow and green peas pricing has converged a few weeks ago now. For the most part new crop pulses have been looking very strong. We have been seeing around $248/bu delivered for August-October for yellow peas.

Canola: Canola futures have been making have been showing some strength as we approach new crop. Canola for November has been as high as $471.0/MT delivered. Old crop has been as high as $10.70/bu delivered for August in some places still.

Thank you Jean Finnigan for this great photo!

Buyer Brief – by Kyler Tluchak

While watching the first round of the NHL playoffs in 31°C heat in Edmonton, I had to remind myself that this is in fact the end of August and harvest is all but on its way. With sources forecasting record shattering yields for the year and already high-quality crops coming off, it will be a good market for any buyer.

Feed barley prices have continued to drop off as a decrease in demand and crops beginning to come off down south are making for good pickups. Fall crops still available in market are seeing prices delivered Lethbridge averaging around $195/MT-$200/MT. New-crop prices also have seen a slight decrease and are hovering similarly around the $205/MT-$210/MT delivered Lethbridge area.

Graded wheat continues to be a quiet item in the market as feed wheat prices, availability, and quality are making for good buys. Picked up prices for feed wheat has dropped and expect to see around $200-$210/MT in central Alberta. As noted earlier, a potential record yield for the fall will set up a great market for buyers in the future with good quality product.

Oats and pulses continue to be quiet in the market with #2 quality oats coming out of the northern part of Alberta still seeing around $215/mt picked up. Last remainders of spring threshed oats continue to trickle into the market mainly around northern and central parts of Alberta. Northern areas picked up seeing around $150/MT as more central seeing around $190/MT.

As temperatures soar in the prairies this week, the market will likely be the opposite as combines already in full swing in southern Alberta and parts of Saskatchewan will be filling up the market and softening last fall crop pricing.

Seller’s tip: We are so close to harvest, lets clean out those bins! We need to make room for new crop. Call us today to help you market both, 1-888-969-5552.
