I had to move my lizard to our new home over the weekend and that experience not only taught me some new lessons and facts about our beloved reptile (who is now 8 years old & named ‘Poe’), but it also reminded me of all the reasons I love lizards- especially Blue-Tongued Skinks!
Blue-Tongued Skinks are known as one of the friendliest & easiest reptiles to care for, so they are often recommended as the ideal lizard for those who have not yet experienced reptile care. They are omnivores & will eat just about anything that is leftover in your fridge (hence their nickname of being the ‘garbage disposals’ of the reptile world), but they still require a structured & varied diet of protein, fruits, and vegetables (some of Poe’s favourites include a variety of worms, boiled egg, arugula, bok choy, carrot, green beans, strawberries, and especially bananas).
Perhaps their most notable trait is their tongue, which is a deep, berry blue- they stick out their tongue when they feel threatened to frighten off predators or just when they are feeling curious. While caring for Blue-Tongued Skinks is considered easy when compared to other large lizards, they are a tropical species that need a constant average temperature of 30 degrees Celsius on one side of their terrarium and approximately 22-25 degrees Celsius on the other, as well as diligent misting to keep the humidity levels high! Like many lizards, Blue-Tongued Skinks can detach their tails for protection; the tail will grow back, but re-grown tails are often deformed and the process is uncomfortable for them (in other words, make sure to not grab your Bluey from the tail when handling!).
When looking for a new pet, people often think of the furry creatures that many love so much, but don’t forget to consider a reptile friend! While they may not be soft & fuzzy like a cat or dog, Blue-Tongued Skinks are extremely social & often ask to come out to play when they hear their caregiver’s voice (or in Poe’s case, when he hears music), and their long, pudgy bodies and short legs make them adorable in their own way. An additional bonus is their lifespan- if you consider a Blue-Tongued Skink for your next pet, you’ll be gaining a friend for the next two decades.
