Better Late Than Never . . . We Would like to Introduce

By May 22, 2019Blog

We would like to introduce the three newest additions to the Agfinity team! Sandra joined the team in January 2019, Jordan McCourt jumped into the Agfinity deep-end in early April.

Sandra Correia-Letendre, Sales Assistant
Born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, studied fashion and business at the University of Manitoba during which time she did an exchange program to Holland and got the travel bug. She’s travelled to many places in the world, both through work and personally. She loves experiencing/learning about new cultures. She comes from a Portuguese background and enjoys all the food and traditions that come along with it.
After being in the fashion industry (both as a buyer and planner) for 9 years she decided to give it a go at her own business which is when she moved to Edmonton in 2007. Her and her business partner opened up a local women’s boutique that is now going onto 11 years. This is where she later found her husband Brady and had her son, Mateo. She loves her boys!
She’s big on birthdays and is known for remembering everyone’s birthday – and without Facebook’s help! She loves spending time with family and friends. Relationships are important to her, both professional and personal. She believes a handshake still matters and is happy to work for a company that strives to be transparent, unbiased and genuine in everything they do in order to build solid, lasting relationships.

If you come by the office, she’s always up for a game of foosball! Be warned, she is pretty competitive!

Jordan McCourt, Plower
Little did Jordan know back in 2015 that in less than a year, he would move across the country to Edmonton, Alberta. Was it a job opportunity? Was it a change of scenery? Was it a girl? The answer is all the above! But, mostly the girl.
Growing up in the touristy city of Niagara Falls, Ontario, Jordan was not accustomed to the world of agriculture. Shortly after meeting a native Edmontonian visiting the area, Jordan’s interest in Alberta quickly developed. A few months later in the following spring, Jordan found himself on a plane, Alberta-bound. This Edmontonian girl’s family set him up with a place to stay, a vehicle to drive and a job to work, which happened to be the family’s fertilizer distribution company. And just like that, Jordan had found his way into the Ag-life.
Over these last 3 years, Jordan grew an appreciation for farmers, farming, and all the hard work that goes into the industry. After learning the processes of seeding, fertilizing, spraying, and harvesting, Jordan is excited to be involved in the stages of the selling and buying grain. He is also excited to announce that he married that girl, Holly, in July 2018.

Market Report by Nelson Neumann

Barley: The feed barley market has seen a pricing rally. This is largely for quick movement with opportunities for end of May and first half June. The pricing rally is on the back of limited supplies and trouble with corn in the United States. It’s very wet in the Midwest causing massive delays in seeding; because of this corn prices have skyrocketed $0.50/bushel higher shaking up feedlot alley pricing. If only they could send some of that moisture our way.

Wheat: The wheat market has been firming up over the past week as well. Not nearly as big a rally as feed barley, but welcome news, nevertheless. Helping to support this rally is weakening export out of the Russian Black Sea region. They were expected to pull out of the market after shipping 25 million ton but ended up having their second largest year for exporting. There is also dryness in the Volga river region propelling pricing. Durum demand is also increasing with it largely headed not for Europe but for North Africa1.

1. Chart courtesy of www.barchart.com

Oats: Milling oats bids remain strong although it appears that the high of the market may have passed up by. Bids are heard around $3.55 delivered in the capital region. Feed oats demand also has softened recently but bids remain strong. If you have old crop oats now is a good time to sell as new crop bids are substantially lower and the price will begin to converge potentially sooner rather then alter as buyers gain coverage.

Peas: If you had to sum up the pea market in one word it would be uncertainty. And if you read these you have probably heard me say it before: markets don’t respond well to uncertainty. Central Alberta #2 yellow bids are at $6.50 delivered for old crop and $6.25 for new crop. Greens have cooled off bids around $12.00 with Maple peas around $9.00.

Canola: Canola has made a small recovery with bids increasing $0.25-$0.35 and $10.00 delivered being in play for quick movement. The political situation still appears to have no end in sight in the foreseeable future. Soybean pricing has been fluctuating ~$10/MT day to day. Outlook would still be considered bearish despite the recent uptrend. See the past month in the chart below courtesy of www.barchart.com.

Buyer Brief – by Sandra Correia-Letendre

Before the long weekend we started to see a mini Rally. Prices were being hit and demand was high. We continue to see this as this week starts. This isn’t for all commodities, mostly Barley. We are seeing prices hit $268/mt delivered Lethbridge and $255/mt delivered Calgary for Barley. With seeding still going on, buyers are having a difficult time finding grain for immediate shipment. Once buyers get their coverage, we will see prices taper off again in the next few weeks. However, with minimal availability of old barley, we may see another rally happen again in July for last minute coverages before new crop ships.
Another factor that may affect Barley, both old and new crop, is the abundance of rain happening in Midwest US. Producers are at a halt waiting for the weather to dry so they can start seeding. Corn is one of the grains that producers are struggling to plant enough acres. They will need to make a call to seed or take crop insurance. Due to this, the US has seen a corn rally with prices jumping up $0.55/bu over the past week. This means we may see limited corn delivering to Canada. What does this mean for Barley? High demand! This means prices will go up. It is a bit of the waiting game to see what happens here in the next few weeks.

Seller’s Tip : There is opportunity for quick movement barley inventory. If your looking to move your barley now don’t wait for the rally to pass. Please call us at 1-888-969-5552.
