Here is my first attempt at making the pint size newsletter more news-centric. I felt that you all deserve a break from my silly antics. So…here’s an outtake on Ag News right now. – Joseph
The first item, which is 5 days old, is a major event regardless. Former Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay has been shuffled to Veteran Affairs following the resignation of Jody Wilson-Raybould (regarding the SNC-Lavalin controversy). Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau, formerly with International Development and La Francophonie (group of nations in which French is a culturally significant language), was transitioned to the Agriculture position. “It’s a huge privilege, I come from a rural riding, a dairy riding actually from south of Quebec, so I’m already very close to the agricultural producers in Quebec,” Bibeau says as she spoke with media outside of parliament. “I know quite a bit about supply management, and really look forward to work with agriculture producers on various issues.” Also, just in case you forgot, Canadians head to the polls for a federal election this October…just saying.
I’m sorry, but I should address the beat down that Canola received last week. While some are still in shock the new reality of new lower trading levels for Canola is here. May Canola has key support at $450/MT. Analysts say that resistance lies at $484/MT. We may see a plus or minus $30-35/MT flux over the next month. China has cancelled Richardson’s registration to ship canola to China, according to a document listing approved exporters posted on the website of the Chinese customs administration on March 1. This is the first documented case of actual disruption from China, an indication that this in now real and personal. Export will clearly be affected. Estimates show that there is risk of losing 1MMT of demand, but its too early to tell. There is much more to this, but its difficult to know where to start with no clear end or resolution in sight.
Current Feed Barley and Feed Wheat opportunities are still quite strong for March – May. March homes will be gone before the cold weather, so if you need shipment before road bans, muddy yards and seeding, now is the time to secure pricing. Buyers are sick of prices ratcheting up but are still needing to secure supply for April – May. Their strategy is to buy now and get as much coverage as possible so that they are not against the ropes during seeding. Buyers are hitting the ask and, if price expectations are too high, are giving reasonable counters.
If you have spring threshed grain still in the field, please let us know and we can find a home. We strongly advise against shipping spring threshed or any off-spec grain without giving the buyer or marketer a heads up on quality. Great prices in advance are available but discounts take the negotiating power out of the seller’s hands and frustrates the buyer with products below specs into a home that is paying above market prices.
