Everybody’s Free To Wear Sunscreen

By March 21, 2018Blog

Ladies and gentlemen of the prairies!

Wear sunscreen!

-A farm-focused parody of
Mary Schmich’s famous essay written in 1997

If we could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it! The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proven by scientists, whereas the rest of our advice has no basis more reliable than our own meandering experience…

We will dispense this advice now…

Don’t worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubblegum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind. The kind that blindside you at 4pm on some idle Tuesday.

Do one thing everyday that scares you. But respect farm safety initiatives. They were designed to keep you and your family safe.

   Farm hard.

Don’t be reckless with people’s trust. And don’t put up with people who are reckless with yours.

Don’t waste your time on jealousy. Sometimes you’re ahead. Sometimes you’re behind… Good yields and prices come and go. The race is long, and in the end, it’s only with yourself!

Remember the compliments you receive. Forget the insults… If you succeed in doing this, tell us how. By the way… we think you’re incredible!

Keep your old love letters (and Agfinity newsletters). Throw away your old bank statements.

   Farm some more! …
And stretch! Especially during seeding and harvest.

Don’t feel guilty if you don’t know what you want to do with your life… Some of the most interesting people we know started farming in their retirement.

Drink your milk and get plenty of calcium. And be kind to your knees. You’ll miss them when they’re gone!

Maybe you’ll marry. Maybe you won’t. Maybe you’ll have children. And maybe, just maybe, they’ll join you on the farm! … Whatever you do, don’t congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself either. Our choices are half chance and so are everybody else’s. But make sure to smile proudly when others congratulate you. After all, you’ve done an amazing job thus far!

Celebrate the rain. Even if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room.

Always read pesticide label directions. Even if you don’t follow them one hundred percent.

Do NOT read American Cowboy magazine. You’re Canadian. We have our own magazine

Whether you farm together or separately, get to know your parents. You never know when they’ll be gone for good. Be nice to your siblings. They are the best link to your past and the people most likely to help you at harvest. Understand that friends come and go, but for the precious few, you should hold on dearly. You never know when you’ll need somebody’s tractor to pull yours out of the mud.

Accept certain inalienable truths: Prices will suck. Grocery prices will be fixed. And politicians will drive you crazy.
We too will get old, and when we do, we’ll fantasize that when we were young, prices were reasonable (and hopefully better than reasonable when talking to Agfinity), grocery stores had our best interest in mind, and politicians were noble, or at least misunderstood… Well… maybe not those last two things…

Be careful whose advice you buy. And be patient with those who supply it (in a free newsletter no less). Advice is a form of nostalgia. Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it’s worth. Kind of like most farm auctions!!

“Trust me on the faba beans!”

And like Mom has told Dad, time and time again, you only get one neck!

… So why not use sunscreen this growing season? You surely won’t regret it!  😀

Market Report
–
by Tracy Green

Barley: Feed barley demand is starting to soften with many southern Alberta feedlots full for April and quickly filling up for May – June deliveries.  Many malt growers are taking advantage of the strong feed market and selling off their remaining malt barley, as bids could weaken into late spring for malt.

WheatCWRS wheat gained strength from the weaker Canadian dollar last week, as well as dry weather in parts of the US, with bids increasing by $2-$4/mt.  Feed wheat bids are still strong with picked up May-June Edmonton area bids at $5.80/bu and $6/bu+ for Calgary area and south.  Demand is still good and quick movement is available at a discount.

Oats: Bids for 2CW and 3CW oats are flat and movement is now pushed into May with buyers covered through April.  A sudden demand for good quality feed oats has brought opportunities for feed bids close to the 3CW price or better depending on location.

Canola:  The weaker CDN dollar gave strength to canola throughout last week, but deliveries have been delayed due to hold ups on the west coast. Buyer demand is easing now for old crop and basis levels are weakening.

Peas: Both green and yellow 2CW pea prices have remained flat.  Some interest in feed yellow peas has brought premiums above the 2CW price.

When it comes to getting you the best grain pricing, we are willing to go anywhere!
