Eureka! There’s something grown inside a farmer!

By February 7, 2018Blog

HOW IT’S DONE: The caramel filling is poured into this cavity. Then the top of the mould is cooled again so that the top layer of caramel becomes temporarily hard. Another layer of warm melted chocolate is poured into the mould and when it cools, the Caramilk bar is complete.

Now you know!

“River! Put those eggs back!” Michelle exclaimed, stopping our five year old son from taking a self-taught juggling lesson. “They aren’t cooked and could break.”
“But, I want to get the milk out,” River replied.
Michelle and I looked at each other and exchanged flabbergasted looks. “Eggs don’t have milk in them, buddy,” I chuckled, “they have … egg…”

How could it be that, I, River’s grain trading dad, had just spent three days at FarmTech in Edmonton, surrounded by thousands of people who not only eat eggs, but farm them, and yet, somehow, my son was unclear on what was on the inside of one…? Udder embarrassment (saved by a hilarious dairy pun).

Sometimes we learn new things that seem obvious to the rest of the world. I remember my eureka moment when I realized, at age eleven, that our hide-a-bed was called a hide-a-bed because it hid – a bed! … Who knew!!? … It does make you think though. And – thinking – is one of the reasons Agfinity has attended FarmTech the last several years.

There’s something inside FarmTech that not every conference has. And for us, that sweet caramel is farmers. Farmers – who happen to be sporting mandatory name tags!! How great it is for an online/phone company like Agfinity to be able to identify our customers out in the real world! … To everyone who pulled us aside and said hello last week, we thank you! It was great to see some of you again, to put new faces to old and new names! … Not that we think you have an “old” name, Fletcher… I more so meant we’ve been doing business for so long… You know what I mean!

For my son, the secret of the egg, though maybe a little disconcerting, was easily cracked. And regarding farming, the “secret” within has always been (and will always be) farmers. But, inside the heart and soul of a farmer… Now, those are secrets that might actually still exist.

What pushes a farmer to achieve and succeed? To never stop learning? Or growing? To plant new crops, year after year, with little to no guarantee for a profitable outcome? … Well, I’ll tell you one thing, it’s not milk or eggs! … The farm inside the farmer may forever be an unharvestable mystery, but, if I were to guess, I would say you probably already know what the ingredients are. You, your parents, and your parents’ parents have been growing them for years.

Eureka moments! We love ’em! Hope you get to experience one again soon!  🙂

Market Report
–
by Tracy Green

Barley: If you’ve been waiting for spring premiums before selling your barley, this is likely the time to start actively marketing. Buyers have been buying easily all winter and are well bought February – March with premiums now available for April-May.

WheatWe’ve been seeing more demand and higher bids for feed wheat for Feb-March delivery.  Sellers have been bringing their low protein #1 and #2 HRS wheat into the feed market as line companies are still heavily discounting lower protein wheat.

Oats: Lots of decent quality 2CW oats this year has kept prices and demand fairly flat. 3CW will still trade about $.10 – $.25/bu under 2CW.  Feed oats bids vary according to location and opportunity that comes available.

Canola:  The canola market rose with strength from the weaker loonie yesterday.  With new crop canola acres expected to be huge this year and futures showing strength, growers are being encouraged to keep an eye on new crop bids and consider pricing forward.

Peas: Yellows:  No change for the yellow pea market.  We could see some recovery as we head into spring but currently prices are staying under $7/bu delivered.  Greens:  Prices holding at $8.20-8.58/bu delivered for 3% bleached or less.

The Feed Buyer Brief
–
Joseph Billett

With a neutral to bearish Stats Canada Report behind us and the only commodity with a slightly bullish sediment being canola, there is still limited opportunities for February to March delivery.  Many buyers have now switched their focus to buying for April – May.  Mills and feedlots seem to have more interest in Wheat for March bidding around the $5.75/bu levels, and buying enough, they know they could fill their bins at $6.00/bu and may be forced to if purchasing slows. Feed barley buyers are more focused on April-May coverage, and are willing to pay premiums for that timeframe.  Demand is much higher north of Red Deer as southern Alberta feeders have easier access to corn and lower quality feed wheat.

A strategy for sellers is to have a pricing target in mind, but

being aware that you don’t

always need to hit the bullseye. The outer bull ain’t bad either! Price or delivery time, knowing that buyers are focusing to buy on that April -May time frame.

Would love to hear your thoughts on current markets!
