When chips hit the pan.

“If you’re having non-farm problems, I feel bad for you son, I’ve got ninety-nine problems, but getting rich ain’t one.”

***

Spend ten minutes on a farm and you’ll quickly realize: Farmers are problem solvers!

Joseph, Amy, Michelle and I had the opportunity to spend a few hours on a farm this past weekend to get some shots for an upcoming Agfinity video. Being that it was in the middle of harvest time and we wanted to keep our hosts as customers, we did our best to stay out of their way…

In the first half hour, we witnessed the son – elbow-deep in one of the combines – rubbing the burnt rubber left behind by a broken belt. “We basically just started and this happened,” he told us, his smile contrasting the grease-covered situation. “Fixing it was going to take too long, so Dad and I ended up buying a new combine this year.”

Dad was fixing the motor of an auger on the other side of the yard… “We were supposed to be hauling high moisture wheat a couple weeks ago, but it was raining,” he chuckled. “The weather’s good now, so sure enough, the auger isn’t working!”

I couldn’t believe it… Either these men have an extreme tolerance for stress or I don’t have what it takes to be a farmer… At my desk, a level ten problem is something like slow internet speed. If we used the same scale, a broken combine at harvest would probably kill me!

Then, when it’s all said and done, if you’re fortunate enough to have a crop to market, grain farmers get to dive into the nitty-gritties of their operation: grades… proteins… falling numbers… green seeds… heated seeds… ergot and moisture percentages… Each component, a chance to lose a little money off the field.

Imagine a baker having the same inputs as a farmer… Imagine their oven breaking down or their cookies cooking too fast. Imagine their muffins not retaining enough moisture… Then, imagine their customers determining the value of their product based on how shiny and prominent their chocolate chips were, with set discounts for dryness, raisins, and other foreign material…

No offense to any bakers reading this! I love baking. But a baker, like many other professionals, have the luxury of starting over when chocolate chips hit the pan. Farmers do not have this luxury… Instead, farmers require a somewhat priceless ingredient to be hand-mixed into their recipe: perseverance! … There’s no sugar-coating it. Heck, we can’t even fill it with raspberry jelly! Without perseverance, a farmer just might not make it as a farmer.

We think you’ve got it though… Perseverance… You didn’t just open our newsletter to laugh at a few of the funny pictures. You came to conquer! The grain prices and market update below are just a small piece of the puzzle, but we know they make up their fair share of this crazy profession called farming… And you know, we at Agfinity are proud to be placed wherever you see fit. Like Joseph said last Saturday, “Your pricing is our icing.

It surely will not be a piece of cake, but we’re looking forward to stirring up this year’s marketing plan with you! Talk to you soon!

Market Report
–
by Tracy Green

Barley: Snow and rain has brought some quick movement opportunities for feed barley if you can load.  Prices are still holding for Oct-Nov-Dec with about a nickel carry per month.  Delivered Lethbridge prices for Oct-Nov at $4.45/bu and Dec at $4.50/bu.

Wheat:  Good demand for feed wheat currently and prices remain strong.  We’re now seeing more high moisture feed wheat as sellers are taking it off to avoid a repeat of last year’s harvest.  We can help you find a home for your higher moisture feed wheat – call us.  Still the same story with low protein HRS wheat – hefty discounts are making feed bids pretty attractive.  If you’ve got high protein HRS, your best strategy seems to be hold and wait.

Oats: Buyers are finally coming to the table for 2CW and 3CW oats after low demand through August and the first part of September.  Bids are coming in around $2.70 – $3.00/bu delivered Edmonton/Calgary for good quality #2CW.  Large new crop supplies are making buyers tentative, but quality is now an issue with any oats still in the field.

Canola:  Still hearing $11/bu picked-up targets could hit in the near future, but currently seeing bids around $10.50-10.75/bu at the bin for Oct-Nov.

Peas: Still seeing harvest lows for both greens and yellows. Recession in India has slowed imports from Western Canada as well as a recent sale of yellow peas from Russia. Green pea bids should stay steady due to lower production this year throughout western Canada.

The Buyer Brief
–
Joseph Billett

Buyers are still in a holding pattern and are looking for a clear direction in markets.  The only benefit with the nasty weather that slammed Alberta was that most areas that were affected had completed harvest.  Farmers Edmonton/north are still capitalizing on this string of good weather for as long as it holds out.  Because of the delay in harvest, many buyers are looking for Barley and Wheat that can load right away.  Other than quick movement, buyers have coverage for the next 2-3 weeks and are starting to want first half November on offers.

Corn has been doing its job for buyers, keeping Barley and Feed Wheat from running away.  Feed Wheat, we’re seeing more cases of .08+ ergot in northern Alberta than previous years, some buyers can make these levels work, but sellers may see a lower price, mostly because of higher freight costs.  Currently seeing the best premiums from buyers for Nov-Dec, there is still uncertainty on clear price direction moving forward.  Would love to hear your thoughts on current markets!

All the buyers at Agfinity can Make it happen. Fast turn around times on every thing. Movement, payment, and the inbetween  that all of us farmers don’t see or care about. Good job to the Agfinity crew and keep on buying our grain.”
