Most people think Christmas is the most wonderful time of year but hear at Agfinity we simply know that just isn’t true. Hearing the old 9600 fire up, that’s the best time of year. Ok well maybe you have a newer combine than a John Deer 9600, but that what I grew up with and that’s when I start getting excited. Its finally hear, time to harvest. It’s been a long winter, an unpredictable spring and a hot summer filled with many ups and down in the grain market. It has been as sporadic as ever and the violent price swings has been the toughest on our farmers. But as we start firing up the combines across the province, we can see that at the very least its looking better than last year. Some areas look better than other, some had plenty of moisture and others are still dry as a bone. That’s half the battle but its what every farmer has signed up for. But as we all know getting the crop off the field is only half the battle, you must have somewhere to sell it! That is where we come in. Give us a call here at Agfinity and speak with one of our fine representatives, whether you’re looking for advice on when to sell your grain, off the combine prices, or you just want to blow off some steam our lines are always open! So cheers to the most wonderful time of year and lets hope for sunshine and good weather as we begin harvest season!
Because Farming is Forever
Declan Kummer
Buyer Brief – by Sandra Correia-Letendre
As harvest starts in some parts of Alberta, there are still sellers looking to get their old crop moved before starting to combine. The next couple weeks are crucial for movement if this is the case. We have had buyers with pockets of opportunities for August movement, but that door is slowly closing. Typically, by this time we would be marketing new crop grain for movement further out ie) Nov, Dec even Jan, but sellers are still seeming bullish with the prices the market will bring. Buyers however are not in agreement.
The last couple days, we saw old crop and new crop barley stabilize. Buyers are looking for Sept/Oct deliveries. Yesterday, we saw bids push as high as $360/mt delivered Lethbridge for FH Sept. This could change tomorrow. As the crops continue to look good, buyers feel that there will be a lot that will be coming to the market at the same time as many sellers didn’t pre-sell much of their new crop. In speaking with some feed lots, corn does not seem to be playing as big of a factor for local market as it did last year due to being higher in price and easier to feed.
Oats has slowly been losing momentum each week. Prices continue to drop and so does demand. Some indications from buyers that we have been seeing for new crop #2 Oat is approximately $325/mt FOB Edmonton area for Sept/Oct movement.
The weather continues to cooperate for a good harvest. Forecast for the next week is showing heat in upper 20’s to low 30’s for most parts of prairies. Hopefully this will be balanced off with some precipitation.
Sellers Tip: Consider contracting your New Crop grain before supply levels increase moving into the harvest season and markets may continue to fall. Call us to discuss 1-888-969-5552
