Does anyone have inflation on their minds lately? It is hard not to notice inflation at work here at Agfinity and during my daily life. It seems like a long time ago when we were able to go on with our lives without inflation. The days when filling up a car was annoyingly expensive but in the budget. Buying a house was a little more than a dream and mortgage payments were also in the budget. Groceries were somewhat affordable. Cryptocurrencies were for some unknown population of people.
Let’s look at our current situation. With Russia invading Ukraine, disrupting movement of available energy/oil and food, accompanied by the pandemic, supply chain crisis, labor shortages, climate damage by industries, it is no wonder why we are thinking about inflation. Here are some interesting numbers and tidbits I found during some reading on-line from a newspaper.
Food prices are continuing to rise at an alarming rate. the 8.8% year-over-year increase is the largest in more than 40 years. Skyrocketing food prices are particularly damaging to the low- and middle-income population, as they spend a greater share of their after-tax income on food.
The latest year-over year data shows that energy prices rose 32%. I saw a funny a funny cartoon in the newspaper the other day with a husband asking his wife, while sitting on the couch, “should we eat this week or fill up the car….”
Price inflation has been seen in housing, with house prices having increased value by over 20 % this past year, after 14 straight months of year-over –year home price growth reaching into the double digits, we’re finally starting to see the early sighs of a cooling house market.
Have you noticed super inflated politics? First Trump with his bigger than life ego tries to change the U.S. Democracy to Make America Great Again followed right after, not sure if coincidentally, by Putin’s even larger ego to Make Russia Great Again. Canada is not immune to this of course as we watch our political landscape populated by Trudeau, Poliviere, Kenny, Ford. All of which we hear brought up in conversations or the news at least once a day.
This week it looks like some things like grain prices, housing, gas prices and bitcoin are starting to deflate. Let’s hope that food prices and politics will start to deflate as well. Maybe soon we will be able to go to the local coffee shop and hear coffee talk that is just over inflated…. Not reality.

Buyer Brief – by Sandra Correia-Letendre
Summer official hit yesterday, and it’s been raining through out most of Alberta the last couple weeks. For most, with rain at this time of year brings optimism. We have seen this with sellers more readily coming to the market this past week to sell their New Crop grain. Many sellers are still being cautious with how many loads they want to commit to until they see more grow in their crops. Overall, the markets are bearish. We have seen most commodities prices tumble down over the last week.
Even with the downturn in the market, New Crop Barley is still seeing record highs. We have started to see 1 bid from some buyers for New Crop and Old Crop…the spread is closing. Bids for New Crop Barley have been around the $420-$425/mt delivered Lethbridge for Sept/Oct movement. Old Crop bids are sitting around $425-$440/mt delivered Lethbridge for July/August.
Wheat has also taken a big hit. In the last weeks, it has still seen some volatility but has been on a downward trend the last week. The recent rain and forecasted rain in the Prairies has brought some price pressure. Book in your wheat before you forget to secure July pick up as space is limited.
As it’s counter parts, Canola also continues to drop. “ICE canola futures continue to be hammered lower this morning in what may turn out to be the largest single month decline in canola marketing history! Futures are down another $22 to $28/tonne to start this morning.”, as per Mike Jubinville for the AM Market Report June 22, 2022.
The weather to come…the Prairies are to expect more rain over the next few days, mostly in central and northern Alberta and northwestern Saskatchewan. The temperatures over the next few days will be cooler low to mid teens for central Alberta and northern Saskatchewan. The rest of the Prairies will see highs in the 25-30 degrees Celsius. For farmers, hoping mother nature brings you what you need in weather.
Seller’s Tip: Harvest is right around the corner, now is the time to lock in those still great prices in case the market keeps slipping. Need help, call us at 1-888-969-5552
