Introducing . . . Declan Kummer!

By February 3, 2022Blog

Declan is from Barrhead, Alberta where he was born and raised on a little farm outside Barrhead. Declan has lots of experience being on the farm whether its feeding cattle with his dad or helping his grandpa with his grain operation. Growing up if Declan wasn’t busy playing Hockey or baseball, he was usually sitting in a tractor Bailing hay, cultivating some land, or helping his dad repair countless pieces of equipment. Declan truly knows what life is like for our Alberta farmers.

After graduating from NAIT Declan spent time working up at the Albian Oils sands and at the Strathcona refinery as a Plant Operator. As much as he enjoyed the oilfield, he always wanted to move his career back to the AG industry. Declan’s goal is to find farmers the best price and the best opportunities for selling their grain. He prides himself on finding a solution for farmers and wants to get them the best price for their grain.

When Declan is away from work, he is usually at the ball diamond or hockey rink if he is not back home on the Farm. Declan is always up for coffee time and loves talking about different commodity pricing marketing tips and all things farming.

Because Farming is Forever

Buyer Brief – by Joseph Billett

Feed grains right now continue to slump from the highs of the market. Everyday there are fewer opportunities available for both price and nearby movement. If sellers have road bans or yard challenges in the spring, homes that can take grain in February are getting slim. New crop barley is starting to be traded and sets a tone for where pricing may be heading. Prices are still at all time highs including new crop. Feed buyers that are not fully committed to corn are only buying hand to mouth a few loads at a time. Talking to a buyer who has switched to corn they said “we would have loved to feed barley, but it was too hard to source more than a few loads at a time at very high values. It was easier to secure a large lot of corn.” As selling increases prices soften and delivery time frames push further into the spring/summer.

With regards to canola, we have a buyer who said that they only need 20 loads February and March then nothing until April. Wants to let sellers know that their window for Feb-March delivery is closing. They also mentioned that other elevators are only April Delivery. The Basis number will fall for April meaning that producers will be losing $30-50 a tonne. Market will stay higher but will lose money on the basis.
