Adventure Awaits Again!

For the last 3 years I have been able to do a multi day motorcycle trip, this year and last have been with the added bonus on Covid. However last year my friend and I went to BC in June and while we were there things opened up over the summer. A very similar experience happened this year as well, we left Monday June 28^th and went East as far as Kenora, Ontario, the further we went East the heavier the restrictions were. We were gone for 9 days and 4993kms in one of the earliest heat waves North America has see in a while. I figure that an adventure is an adventure whatever form it takes whether it be a walk, a fishing trip, or mountain biking, every time I get out I take the attitude that I’m embarking on an adventure. When I look at a trip as an adventure, it helps me take things in stride and not sweat inconveniences. Setbacks are just detours in the adventure.

So we left June 28^th and returned July 6^th, eight nights later. This was the first trip that I had planned myself and because we were crossing the prairies twice I wanted to do it differently so on the way east we stayed northern and going west we stayed more southern. I know I’ve mentioned this before but another benefit of an adventure is that I look at the journey and not just the destination, how we get somewhere and the experiences that we have equally as important as the destination. Here are some pictures of the trip.

Day 1 – Meadow Lake, SK.

I picked a nice scenic water feature for a break.

Day 3 – Winnipeg, MB.

After a day of riding in the heat, this was a glorious site!

Day 4 – Kenora, ON.

My friend Chris has a place on Lake of the Woods in Ontario, his family was kind enough to let us stay there for Canada Day. Did you know that there are 14 000 islands on Lake of the Woods and that you can get to the USA on this lake?

Day 5 – Brandon, MB.

Day 7 – Lethbridge, AB.

Day 8- Fairmont Hot Springs, BC.

This was an awesome adventure, driving through the prairies in the heat and seeing the stages and states of your crops through Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba was really interesting. One thing’s for sure moisture is needed everywhere this year. Hopefully you are able to take some time for an adventure this summer, able to renew old traditions or create totally new ones.

Market Report – by Wade Seville

Lack of precipitation across the US and Canadian prairies has had a huge impact on pricing in the recent weeks. The kicker is that although prices are quite high, many producers are worried about their harvest this season (or lack thereof). I suppose this can be considered a double-edged sword, in the sense that prices would have never climbed up this high if producers were anticipating big yields. Although parts of Alberta and Saskatchewan saw light showers scattered throughout over the past week, crop conditions remain stressed and conditions dry. Wildfire smoke has been helping regulate the blistering temperatures, but many producers have been sharing stories about nothing but dry and burned crops in their areas. See drought map here.

Canola: Canola is going through a bit of a pullback today, although most analysts believe it to be short lived. Canola futures are down about $20/MT today, however cash bids seem to be holding steady in the $20-$22/bu range across most areas in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

On the soybean front over in Argentina, reports show they have sold about 58% of their crop this year – about 2% ahead of this time last year.

Wheat: Wheat markets are still carrying on with their bullish run – especially for feed. Hearing prices up to $10.89/bu delivered into central Alberta areas for a hard red feed. Soft white feed wheat is heard up to $10.60 delivered central Alberta. Lots of options available for marketing off spec or mixed grains as well. Bin bottoms? Give us a shout, we can arrange to have your grain picked up and net you the best price possible.

Barley: Up, up and away! Barley prices have been blazing higher for the past few weeks, seeing steady gains almost everyday. Prices are heard up to $400/MT or $8.71/bu in Southern Alberta. If you have barely, buyers are interested. Be warned: buyers spots are filling fast. Buyers are doing everything they can to get covered as far out as possible. Consider marketing while prices are HOT and buyer demand is high.

Oats: Oat prices hit a bit of a rally this week, seeing prices climb up to $4.75/bu delivered into central Alberta for a #2 milling oat. Feed oats are up to $4.00/bu in Alberta and western Saskatchewan. This rally can be attributed to a few milling contracts that opened up and high feed prices leaving feeders searching for alternatives to wheat and barley.

Durum: With poor growing conditions reported in the US, durum markets have really begun to take off. Prices are seen for over $10.00/bu in Alberta and Saskatchewan and demand appears to be remaining steady. Now would be an excellent time to set a target for your durum, as prices seem to tick higher everyday.

Buyer Brief – by Sandra Correia-Letendre

This last week it has felt like we are off to the races with the way prices have been climbing up for a lot of feed grains. Demand for old crop has increased and many say it’s due to the dry crops in many parts of Alberta. Feedlots are wanting some last-minute coverage for next couple months in case harvest yields are low.

We have seen Barley rally to the point of almost an increase of $1/bu since last week. This again is record highs for this year. We are seeing Barley bids for July delivered Lethbridge at $395/mt-$400/mt. Some Sellers seem to be holding tight to the last of their old crop barley and nervous about yields for this coming harvest, making it hard to find grain this week. New Crop bids are hoovering around $300-$315/mt delivered Lethbridge for September/October. The demand this week has certainly been with old crop. In talking with many buyers, Corn is going to play a big role in the local feed market this year, especially in Southern Alberta. In talking to one of our buyers out of Lethbridge, we can expect a minimum of 6 unit trains a month for Southern Alberta. Corn is holding at $360-$380/mt delivered Lethbridge. This direct competition to barley may have barley prices cool off closer to harvest even if yields are low.

Feed Wheat is right along side Barley. Bids have been hitting $395/mt -$400/mt delivered Lethbridge for July/August. Durum has also jumped in demand, we traded some feed yesterday at $374.94/mt FOB July around the Sibbald area. Some reports show that the reason Durum value has gone up is that crop conditions in Montana, USA have dropped in the past couple weeks.

Seller’s tip: With corn coming into Southern Alberta for harvest, it may be the time now to empty your barley and wheat bins as prices may decline. In all honesty, your not losing by trading at these record highs today. Let’s work together on marketing that grain, call 1-888-969-5552.
