This past year there has been new highs from crazy grain markets with a strong export market, to shortages in products other than grain like lumber. Covid has really shown us how delicate our economy and markets are, and it has also brough on all-time highs in markets and shown us how heavily we rely on other countries. It also has shown how one thing can disrupt the economic system.
As grain marketers we are always asked “what does your crystal ball say?” To that I usually reply my best guess from my market reading, commodity chart reviews and feedback from our buyers we work with to help gauge the local market. This year I have felt like my crystal ball has been in the shop all year. There has been no telling what this market was going to do as the 2020 crop year has dragged on. At Agfinity as a team we try to read lots of different reports from different perspectives and it seems like no one was able to guess what was coming for us this year. Who knew canola was going to get as high as $24.00/bu delivered this year? When canola hit $12.00/bu this year everyone and myself included, thought wow that’s a great price lets book some in as this was a great price considering what the past few years have done.
As a grain marketer nothing is worse than the feeling we get when we market someone’s grain, and we miss the high of the market or it comes up higher next week. When it comes to marketing your grain, you are not always going to be able to hit the high of every market but there are a few things you can control to get you the best opportunity for your grain.
What can you control when marketing grain?
- The time frame you need to move it in.
- Knowing the specs of your grain.
- Having an idea of what you need to break even.
- Knowing when you will need to get paid.
- Bin space during harvest.
As I do my best to dust off my crystal ball, let us help you market your new crop and old crop through our website. Lets get you some bids on your grain that are real time and the best opportunity for you based on your needs.
