How do we learn new things? How do we teach people new things? How did we learn how to walk, ride a bike or ski? How did we teach our kids how to walk, ride a bike or ski? What the hell am I getting at?
Today I want to talk about how the best teachers in our lives were more like coaches and when I really think about it the better the coach the less, they did. When my kids were learning how to walk, their grandparents and aunts bought them the noisiest and most annoying walkers on the planet to assist them, and my job was to create some security, so they did not go flying down the stairs or impale themselves on the coffee table of death. But other than that, we did not watch YouTube videos on teaching your kid to walk or read “The Idiots Guide to teaching little humans to walk.” You just hoped you were not at work or grabbing a beer when the wee one took those first steps and that your camera was handy and had fresh batteries, cell phones were not quite there yet for my kids. But when they started walking, I was the proudest dad on the planet telling everyone, filming It like it was the moon landing. Letting everyone know that this is an absolute miracle that they are walking at this age, which is based on subtracting 3 months from the previous sibling or whoever else’s kids happen to be in the vicinity of this wondrous act. The point is, that my kid is walking, and it is all because of my amazing teaching and parenting skills, I am so proud of their accomplishment, that I had next to nothing to do with.
The most difficult thing about being a great coach is keeping your mouth shut. The term is “nonjudgmental observation”, which is quite easy when they are a baby with a vocabulary of Mama and daddies favorite swear word. How are you going to judge a baby or give them critical feedback without looking dumber than you already do with your baby talk motivation. They must fall, crash, cry, get up again and repeat and as a parent or a coach you just sit there and watch. Now this is true for riding a bicycle, skating, skiing, surfing there is a basic introduction to how to do it but that likely was not taught by you likely the neighbor’s kids, hockey night in Canada, the ski instructor, and YouTube videos. The greatest advantage we can give as a parent or coach is repetition and the opportunity to fall, crash, cry, get up again and repeat. To me it seems simple that I need to create the environment for them to make mistake and get bumps and bruises, but very rarely do they need my judgments or feedback. Now do not get me wrong I said “simple” not easy because like I said earlier the most difficult think about being a great coach is keeping your mouth shut.
One of the books that really helped me with this thinking is The Inner Game of Tennis by Timothy Gallwey.
It is bananas how many things this principle can apply to in my life. Like my marriage, kids, my job, friendships. I have been trying hard to keep my mouth shut and non-judgmentally observe, allowing the people that I care for in my life to fall, crash, cry, get up again and repeat and giving them the opportunity to do it again and again until they master whatever it is, they want to accomplish. Do not worry I still feel like any of my families or teams’ accomplishments are still because of me and my amazing coaching. Realizing more and more how little I really have to do with it, while trying hard to get out of the way and keep my mouth shut.

Market Report – by Daniel McEachern
The first few months of the new year have started out with their own unique fashion. COVID-19 vaccines are available and starting to be administered globally. The global vaccine initiative is now being led by Israel and UAE followed by Chile in the Bronze position with the UK registering just off the podium in 4th place. Furthermore, the weather itself has created a total new set of challenges, cities throughout Canada have experienced deep cold temperatures. Certain areas have experienced below -50 for the first time this winter. Our neighbors to the south have experienced their own version of a winter storm. Texas has seen temperatures around -16 C which has had a ripple effect throughout the state. Electricity and oil demand has drastically increased as water shortages and mass power outages have been the result of below freezing temperatures that a state like Texas has limited historic experience dealing with.
CAD/USD – The Canadian dollar has a had another decent month, the Loonie continues to hold its ground around the 0.777 to the 0.785. On February 16th, the CAD$ was recorded at 0.7930. The Loonie seen the 30-day lows on January 28th when it was trading at 0.7771. Part of the reason the Loonie has seen an increase since the beginning of December is because of the increase in oil prices. As the dollar is highly tied to global exports the rise in oil prices simultaneously rose the Loonie. With the world pushing for global vaccinations, investors are bullish the global economy will return to historic volumes and demand for energy and transportation fuels will drastically increase.
Canola – According to PDQ.com 1 CDA Canola is trading at $685.76/MT FOB on average of the Peace, North and Southern Alberta regions. This represents a $48.89/MT premium since January. 1 CDA Canola is trading on an average of $675.22 in Saskatchewan and an average of $674.69 in Manitoba. Yesterday, February 16, Canola had jumped to new highs with no resistance in sight. From a technical analysis standpoint, previous highs have potential to become the new support for the current Canola prices.
Barley – The increase in commodity prices have absolutely impacted Barley prices in Western Canada. Not only does the commodity command a premium, but we are seeing that scarcity is becoming an issue as Barley is becoming more difficult to find. Recently, prices have been recorded as high as $270-285/MT FOB Edmonton for Feb/Mar movement. New crop (NC) offers have seen prices range from $225/MT to $235/MT for Sep-Oct and $245/MT to $255/MT Nov-Dec, FOB Edmonton. As the price of feed grain has increased, and the price of cattle have pretty much traded range bound, this has created a whole new market for Off Spec feed grain. This strategy will allow feeders the opportunity to reduce feed costs while continuing operations.
Wheat – 1 CWRS 13.5 has also seen a healthy rally and is currently trading on average of $289.47/MT throughout Alberta, a $6.01/MT premium from last month, which is on top of the $32.44/MT premium that kicked off 2021. Saskatchewan is trading at an average of $275.60/MT and $269.69/MT in Manitoba. 1 CWRS 13.5 is expected to increase in value from the current spot price today to the end of July at $295.08/MT and pull back to mid-$270’s for new crop. Feed wheat has been trading at $260-$270/MT for Feb-Mar with A-M-J trading at $290/MT-$297/MT, FOB Edmonton.
Peas – 2 Yellow peas were trading at an average of $356.90/MT in Alberta which is an $18.61/MT premium from the previous month, $351.41/MT in Saskatchewan a $17.33/MT premium. Manitoba has seen the largest change in price from the $327.48 to the $348.33/MT a $20.86/MT premium. 2 Yellow peas are expected to increase from current spot price to a high of $387.72 at the end of June before retracing to around $333.05 in August. The demand for yellow peas has predominately been China with an estimated 75% of all export consumption. #2 green pea bids have been heard around $9.50/bu FOB farm for Mar-Apr movement. New crop Pea offers are priced near the $9/bu FOB Farm.
Oil – With the global vaccinations under the way investors are supporting their viewpoints with the current demand for oil. Price has increased significantly as the US oil benchmark West Texas Intermediate has reached $60.78 per barrel for WTI’s April contract. This is substantial as it is the first time WTI has broke $60 barrel since prior to the pandemic. Moreover, natural gas is on a rally as it has surpassed the $3.06/MMBtu for the March contract. The colder weather throughout the US has greatly increased the demand for Natural Gas.
Thank you Dakota Bell for this great photo!
Buyer Brief – by Kyler Tluchak
It has certainly been a cold start to February as temperatures across the prairies fell below -20°C last week; warmer temperatures thankfully are on the way. We have seen a slow down past few weeks as heavy coverage for J*F*M has reduced demand for current posted feed grains. Wheat and barley has softened a touch and canola creeps up again.
Barley has remained fairly consistent with slight drops in the north FEB-APR still seeing around $270-$275/MT FOB and into MAY/JUN around $285/MT FOB. Towards the capital region, $280-$285/MT FOB and into MAY/JUN, $290/MT. Moving south towards Calgary area still a few moves around the $285/MT mark for FEB-MAR, out into APR-JUN $286-$292/MT FOB. Lethbridge DLVD FEB-APR, $295-$300/MT, out APR-JUN $312-$315/MT. Handful of new-crop offers coming to the table, seeing movement SEPT-OCT fetching +- $235/MT- $240/MT delivered Lethbridge futures showing around a $275/MT for SEPT-DEC 2021.
Feed wheat has continued to move for strong prices as buyer demands for movement past MAR have seen prices as high as $8.00/BU FOB in the central/southern areas of AB. North of the capital region FEB-APR prices still fetching around $7.50-$7.70/BU FOB and up with movement pushed. Southern areas currently still seeing highs around $8.00/BU with a high thus far of $8.10/BU FOB for JUN-JUL.
Special pickup again is heated canola. With buyers’ interest at a high no matter the movement, location or price. Recent trades seeing around 10-30% heat $8.50/BU-$10/BU again depending on stability, quality and location.
