We Just Love When You Make It So

By June 7, 2017Blog

For the first time ever, my family and I experienced the magical world of Disney in southern California this May.

“Must be nice,” commented an Agfinity customer while reading this just now.

Now wait up! Just wait a darn second!! … Okay… Everyone calm…?

Before I am rightfully chastised for taking a break in the middle of seeding / spring harvest, allow me to first share a little bit about how this trip came to be…

I, from time to time, can be a bit of a procrastinator. I have accepted that. Luckily for me, I married an exceptionally great planner! But before Michelle, I had to figure out a system. One that would ensure I accomplished my dreams.

I did not use a list. Nor did I utilize a calendar. I used the “If Not Now, Then When?” approach.  A very sophisticated planning system, I developed INNTW at age eleven.

Without resorting to a lobotomy, if you could look inside my head, you might find a pencil, an eraser and a chaotic circle of deadlines… But, as I’ve gotten older, the eraser has become smaller, the pencil – shorter. And thus, erasing and rewriting has come with increasing risk. In fact, Disneyland had been erased and rewritten so many times, I had no choice but to abbreviate it to “DL”.

So, last fall, when Michelle proposed we make the big trip just before my thirtieth birthday, my INNTW alarm began buzzing so loudly, I could not deny it any longer. The time had come! The Seitzs were going to Disneyland.

…Was it everything we dreamed it would be…? Everything – and more! … But don’t let me fool you. It was also a lot of work!

Is there anything you’ve been putting off? … A horseback ride through the mountains…? Or maybe jumping out of a plane one day…? Dibs out on that last one…

Well, just like we tell our grain marketing customers, if not now, then when!!?

It may not always be over a rainbow… but there is a place where skies are blue. A time where dreams may come true.

Market Report

 – Tracy Green

Barley
: There is still good demand for feed barley and prices remain firm for old crop June-August.  Spring thrashed bids available and vary depending on quality and location.  Call us and we can shop around for you!  New crop barley bids have a fair bit of upside as we’re still hearing less acres seeded.  Consider pricing new crop in increments to take advantage of a potentially rising market. With current old crop delivered Lethbridge bids at $3.85-3.90/bu, that elusive $4 doesn’t seem too far off.

Wheat: Gradable CWRS rallied due to drought in the US and southern Saskatchewan. Delivered targets of $7.20/bu for fall and $7.40 for winter and spring could get hit.  #1 and #2 CPS wheat remains flat through to fall and old crop feed prices are exceeding elevator bids currently.  Fall harvested feed wheat has become difficult to find and prices are reflecting that. Spring thrashed wheat is also interesting buyers with prices ranging from $4.00-4.30/bu delivered depending on quality. Know your bushel weight, moisture and level of excreta!  We have several good options for spring thrashed wheat, call us and we can help you find a market.

Oats: Lots of spring thrashed oats has saturated the feed market and homes are becoming a little harder to find, but we have some good options still available.  Old Crop fall harvested #2 & 3CW bids are slowing down and prices have dropped a little. Buyers have all they need through to August, but new crop could be a different story.  Heavy rains during seeding prevented some acres from going in, so we could see #2CW new crop prices back up to $3/bu picked up again some time this next year.

Canola: Canola dropped significantly over the last few weeks, but has firmed up this week. We are currently seeing bids at $11.60-11.70/bu for June/July.  This is a good time to price any remaining old crop.  New crop bids under $11/bu delivered ($10.20-10.60/bu delivered depending on location).

Peas:
Lots of demand for old crop yellow peas with bids above $10/bu delivered now.  New crop bids sitting at $8.50 – $8.70/bu but targets of $9/bu delivered should hit. Old crop bids for green peas are getting a little harder to find, but are heard at around $8.25/bu delivered.  New crop prices around $7.93/bu delivered.  We are keeping an eye on new crop green bids; anticipating closer to $9/bu delivered.

The Buyer Brief
–
by Joseph Billett

South of Edmonton, most seeding throughout Alberta is complete.  North of Edmonton, this is a big week and the push is on to get seeding complete! This has created a busy seller who is not too concerned with markets unless they are taking their spring thrashed samples in. But even that is slowing down.  Many buyers have been utilizing the Spring Thrashed rush as much as possible and, for the most part, it seems to have turned out quite well, considering the alternative.
Feedlots still have some holes to fill for June, but most interest is for July – first half August.  Even with seeding wrapping up, buyers aren’t pulling their bids back until they see grain coming their way a little more freely.  Its tough to tell how much demand and lack of supply we’re dealing with until New Crop which typically indicates a flat pricing run until harvest.
Would love to discuss with you more on Twitter. Tweet me
