I Went Outside and its Not That Bad Out

By July 10, 2020Blog

As I’ve talked with customers, colleagues, and other people the one thing that I keep hearing is “I’m looking forward to taking that trip I missed, but I have no idea when that will be with the way things are.” Some I talk to are even afraid to plan something because there is a chance it will just get cancelled again or they are unsure of what will be open and available if they go.

Just to be clear I’m writing this article on July 8, 2020 the COVID year. We’ve all been cooped up in our homes and having coffee in fields and parking lots on our tailgates two meters away from our our friends and family. Back on June 12 Alberta opened up to stage 2 relaxing some public gathering restrictions. On June 24th British Columbia entered phase 3 of their restart plan allowing non – essential travel throughout the province. I went on my annual motorcycle trip this year and left on Monday, June 22.

I know there will be many varying opinions and views and that’s totally cool I just wanted to share my perspective on what we experienced as we travelled throughout B.C. at the tail end of Phase 2. We had done our homework and knew what hotels were open and had a rough plan on the route that we were going to take. Its kinda funny when I write this now because based on the timeline it really seems like no big deal and yet to some it can be a very big concern.

So, I left on Monday morning June 22 and rode by myself to meet with my friend Loren in Revelstoke, B.C. That was Day 1 and then from there we took highway 99 through Whistler to Squamish, B.C. for Day 2. Then from Squamish we took the ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay in Nanaimo and road to Tofino, B.C. and stayed there for Days 3 and 4. From there we rode of to Port Hardy, B.C. along the coastal highway for Day 5. On Day 6 we boarded another ferry at 6p.m. to go to Prince Rupert, B.C. arriving at 4p.m. on Day 7 then riding three hours to spend the night in Smithers, B.C. Day 8 had us riding from Smithers to McBride, B.C. and for Day 9 it was a relatively straight shot home to Spruce Grove, AB. for a total of 3588kms over those nine days.

One of the main things that Loren and I discovered quickly is how many of the big franchise restaurants had their dining rooms closed and were only doing take out and delivery leaving all the smaller Ma and Pa businesses open and eager for business. It was really fun to discover some great local places that we would have normally not searched out but from now on it will definitely be part of out plan.

On Day 4 I had a Zoom virtual meeting in Tofino. Because I was on a bike trip and not reading as much news as I do typically, I didn’t know that Stage 3 had happened the day prior. One of the questions asked was what is your first trip going to be after COVID and many people mentioned their plans that had been postponed by COVID to go to Europe and Mexico, and would like to do that when conditions allow. Others mentioned the States and Las Vegas. I couldn’t help but chuckle when then came to me and I said that I was in the middle of my trip and turned the camera around and showed them my view.

On the ferries we had many opportunities to talk with other bikers many from B.C. on some from Alberta like us. It was funny how many people asked us if we had encountered a negative reception in British Columbia mentioning a news article and incidents where cars were keyed and tires were slashed. https://www.nanaimobulletin.com/news/multiple-vehicles-vandalized-and-tires-slashed-in-nanaimos-diver-lake-area/. It was interesting because we had nothing but a warm welcome on our trip with a very diverse response to the pandemic and how it applied to people and their jobs, businesses and personal lives. Some coffee shops and restaurants we went into we couldn’t see how things have changed much from prior to COVID and yet others its was more confusing to navigate the coffee line up then going through security at an airport right after 911. In the evenings our bikes were never harmed and we never felt threatened or unsafe.

As we were waiting to depart onto the “Northern Expedition” a 22 hour ferry to Prince Rupert from Port Hardy we were concerned about being on the waiting list for a cabin knowing that sitting in a chair and trying to sleep would not be an ideal situation. We had called ahead and asked different people with B.C. Ferries questions because we had never taking this voyage before. As we sat there 2.5 hours before departure confident that we knew as much as we could about what to expect on the sailing, a group of bikers showed up and asked us if we had brought food because there was no food on the ferry. At first, we thought they were joking and after asking a few other employees they confirmed and were surprised that no one had mentioned it, clearly not as surprised as we were. Our assumption was that now that they had food service on the shorter sailing to Vancouver Island they surely would have chow on the boat for a 22 hour trip and if they didn’t that they would make sure people knew to bring food. Well we missed the memo and had to shoot back to town and stuff what we could fit into our already jammed saddle bags, various jerkies, cheeses and yes, even some fruit. All in all, the cheap cruise was a success. We got a cabin, didn’t starve, and had a great time chatting with the other bikers while we watched the amazing views.

Coming into Prince Rupert we watched a ship being loaded with Canola which was pretty cool. I’ve shared the video below. We had a great trip this year, very unique and unknown, which I think are the main qualities of a good adventure. Hopefully this summer you and your family are able to find time to go on your next adventure, even though there is a lot of fear and uncertainty out there we found there are far more good people living their lives and trying to get through this shift of life as well.

Buyer Brief – by Sandra Correia-Letendre

Buyers have been anticipating the market to soften in the last couple weeks and it did towards the end of last week. As of today, we are seeing barley prices at approximately $235-$238/mt to feedlot alley for July/August. This is $7-$10/mt down to the previous week. Feed wheat has also lost momentum, graded wheat is challenging to find bidders right now. Feed wheat bids have been around $230-$235/mt delivered Lethbridge for July /August. There is still a lot of old crop grain coming to the market. Buyers are saying there are not enough homes for all the grain they are seeing. We might have seen the peek of the market for old crop. New crop prices for barley are remaining steady at $220/mt delivered Lethbridge for Sept-Nov.

In talking with some of our feedlots, cattle are moving on out! It is nice to hear the relief they feel. Packing plants are finally running back to full capacity. Realagriculture reported that Canadian slaughter data for the last week of June was up 8% to last year. There is still some back long but at this rate they will be catching up before we know it. “You can’t clean it up overnight, but we can get through the backlog more quickly with these kinds of numbers. To that end, Alberta is back up and running full tilt and now accounts for 81 per cent of national slaughter”, Realagriculture article July 3, 2020. If you’re a feedlot or rancher, see your provincial organizations to find out about relief programs. https://www.realagriculture.com/2020/07/beef-market-update-set-aside-program-begins-futures-climb-and-slaughter-numbers-impress/

Seller’s Tip: If you have large tonnage to move, buyers are buying for August now. Let’s get marketing before the market drops any further. Call us at 1-888-969-5552
