Discounts? . . . I don’t want no stinkin’ discounts!
No doubt a version of this phrase has gone through your mind or been spoken out loud at some point in your farming career. Discounts are not ideal, not wanted, not hoped for, not expected . . . knock on wood. I liken it to thinking your child is so well behaved (he or she is a rockstar at home) and then finding out from the his or her teacher that behavior is questionable sometimes. Often it comes right out of left field though, no doubt, there are days you have your suspicions.
Now, I really should entertain you with a funny or amusing anecdote, so here it goes . . . My boys got to go fishing with their dad and uncle over the weekend. To this point they had yet to catch their first fish. They have been very determined as it is a rite of passage in a young man’s life to successfully catch a fish. Obviously, it indicates his level of hunter-gatherer skills for future life, right?! Well, finally they had a successful fishing trip with each boy was able to catch a sizeable northern pike. Unfortunately, the fish weren’t quite big enough to keep from the lake they were fishing in, so both were released back to their natural habitat. Both boys were still ecstatic with lots of hooting and hollering involved. An all-around successful day on the lake. To top off the celebration, I really believe because mom wasn’t around to talk sense into anyone, they felt it was quite necessary to leap off the boat into the lake to put the final splash on the celebrations! Boys!
Amusing anecdote about life with boys aside, as head of the Customer Experience team at Agfinity Inc. I want you to know that we are here for you. Life doesn’t always, or maybe more accurately, rarely goes according to plan. So, in keeping with that unfortunate principle, discounts do happen. No one wants them, no one, sellers and buyers alike, likes them, but they do happen. Often, we, as your broker, don’t find out about discounts on your loads until you let us know. We don’t get the sample results from the end-user as standard practice unless the results are so far off that a load is in jeopardy of being rejected. So, keeping this in mind, we want to encourage you to give us a call as soon as you find out you have been discounted. Often if there is anticipation of potential discounts a discount schedule will be outlined in the contract at the time of booking. But, as we all know that life doesn’t always work like that, sometimes these discounts take everyone a bit by surprise. Especially if this happens, give us a call. We often, but not always, work to make those discounts a little less painful for you. The sooner we are aware of these discounts the greater the chances that the original sample taken by the end-user is still in storage and hasn’t been discarded. If we can ensure that sample is kept, we can also keep the door open for having the sample tested by an independent third-party to verify or refute the results.
We are on your side. We are on the side of all our clients. We want to “harvest the best grain trading opportunities for our customers”. Sometimes those opportunities aren’t the perfectly polished diamonds that we all hope for but let us put in a bit of elbow grease to polish those “diamond in the rough” results as best we can. Give us a call if you have some recent results to discuss and to help you find the best grain trading opportunity for you crop at 1-888-969-5552.

Market Report – by Nelson Neumann
Barley: The feed barley markets price has been holding steady at the highs of the year. Bids are heard as high as $245 into feedlot alley, although there are signs of it softening. New crop is coming, and buyers don’t want to be overbought. Lots of hand to mouth buying and if a quick movement opportunity comes up it may be wise to empty the bins. New crop bids are heard $25/mt lower heard around $220/mt.
Wheat: Gradable wheat prices have been gradually sliding ~20 cents/bushel. This is largely on the back of good weather conditions in most of the global growing regions as well as some much-needed moisture strengthening American winter wheat. Feed wheat prices have been similar to barley but has started to soften quicker. Lots of spring threshed wheat has now had the time to be cleaned and has entered the market. Not much to report regarding durum, bids remain quiet without much expectation of a rally.
Oats: Milling oats has seen a strong price rally as some buyers were needing a bit more coverage before new crop. We have seen prices trade as high as $4.00 picked up for a high-volume offer. Once these positions are filled there is a sharp drop ($1.25/bushel) down to new crop values.
Peas: For both green and yellow peas the new crop and old crop bids have converged with the same price for June/July as September/October. Overall, the pulse crop has been looking good so far, despite perhaps too much moisture in the northern half of Alberta.
Canola: Canola futures have been making some gains largely further out (November 2020 through March 2021). Some of these gains were on the tailfeathers of china once again announcing their plans to buy more US Soybeans. I am starting to sound like a broken record of the markets rallying on this news then falling when less then promised was purchased. I feel like the infographic below sums that up succinctly.
Thank you Brenda Garbutt for this great photo!
Buyer Brief – by Sandra Correia-Letendre
Has the rally continued? Barley keeps its strength as we get closer to the end of this crop season. In the last week we have seen barley hit as high as $245/mt delivered Lethbridge for June/July. There is constant talk of corn coming into southern Alberta this month, but we haven’t seen the wrath of that yet on barley prices. Feed Wheat as well is holding steady at $235-$240/mt delivered Lethbridge for June/July.
Buyers seem to be more focused on old crop/spring threshed versus new crop. This is partly due to the volatility with the cattle market along with everything else going on in the world. Prices for New Crop Barley are sitting between $210-$215/mt delivered Lethbridge. There also doesn’t seem to be an urgency from some sellers to sell new crop as they are still trying to market their spring threshed grain. Some sellers are hesitant to sell right now and over commit as they just completed seeding and want to see if it takes off. Hopefully in the next week or so farmers will get more confident and we can see more New Crop Barley coming to the table to sell.
Will the market level off in the next week or will we see some new highs?
Seller’s tip: We are getting to the start of July and that means New Crop will be coming off in about a month and a half. It’s time to clean out your bins and get the best prices while the market is still up. Call us at 1-888-969-5552.
