How the Pandemic Has Made Us Better

By May 27, 2020Blog

It’s nuts to think that it’s now closing in on 10 weeks that we at Agfinity have been working remotely from home. Eleven weeks ago if you had told me that this was our future I would have said things like, there’s no way people will tolerate an isolation for that long or that it will crush many small businesses, and what about the people that can’t work from home this can’t possibly be the solution. Well ten weeks later, yes “they” could and here we are in a massively different world, country, and province with an uncertain education system, service industry, food supply chain and economy.

I confess that it would be ignorant of me to say that I fully recognize the various hardships that many of our customers are facing during this Pandemic but we do see the difficult challenges that they are facing and will be facing moving forward. However, this isn’t about them, its about me. Dramatic pause as my wife rolls her eyes, but it’s true. I want to talk about how these extraordinary circumstances have made Agfinity better than we were a short ten weeks ago.

First of all, our entire trading system is online and most everything we do is in one system so when we had to go home to work that challenge was already solved. Where this made us better is that our communication has become much more concise, specific and action oriented. We don’t have the luxury of asking any question that comes into our heads across the trading pit. Calling another individual could take longer than just looking it up. We’ve streamlined and vastly improved our meetings and daily communication now that we are all virtual.

Another concern that many business owners had when their employees went home was, “how will I know if they’re doing anything?” That is another area during this season that we’ve improved. It’s called KPI’s (Key Performance Indicators). We have a bunch of metrics that our system is measuring throughout the day and we set goals every morning in our virtual huddle to keep us accountable to meet them. This has been a great way to hold ourselves accountable for our work rather than a manager just having a feeling that you’re not working to the best of your abilities. Every team member at Agfinity can see their KPI’s multiple times throughout the day and adapt their strategy to help them achieve their goals that we all work on together, so we accomplish then as a team.

As I write this there are many areas where we’ve gotten better but the last one I’ll mention today is growth. We’ve virtually hired and on-boarded one person (Kyler Tluchak) during this Pandemic and have another three Plowers starting on Monday, June 1st that will all be trained virtually. We’ve found that training this way has opened a lot of doors. Rather than a new team member looking over your shoulder they can see your entire screen and hear the whole conversation. We are also able to record our training sessions as well so they can be reviewed at any time. In the midst of this uncertainty we’ve been able to push forward and grow.

I just want to say, that none of this has been easy or without challenges and setbacks. Technology doesn’t always work as advertised and notes can often be interpreted many different ways, but I really feel that we’re getting through this and will be better for it. Adversity forces us to draw back or lean in and take it on, whatever your current situation is right now I encourage you to put aside the fear and the “what ifs” and lean into the possibilities of success and that we’ll all get to the other side of this.

Market Report – by Nelson Neumann

Barley: The feed barley market has been strengthened recently. There has been lots of moisture pushing back seeding by a few weeks, meaning that old crop supplies will need to stretch for those extra weeks. In addition, the pens are fuller then expected but with packing plants getting back up to steam this should be short lived. Barley landing into Lethbridge area at $230-$235/mt with bids for the fall heard at $200-$205/mt.

Peas: Yellow peas have held steady with bids holding at $8.00 delivered in Central Alberta. Green Peas have softened slightly down from $12 to mid $11’s. There hasn’t been a lot of volume with either commodity as seller’s were concentrated on getting seeding done as soon as possible.

Oats: The past two weeks we have seen some opportunities pop up with buyer’s who were needing dry oats to get covered into New Crop. Bids heard $3.50 to as high as $4.00 delivered. There are quite a bit of spring threshed oats coming to the market with the quality being better then expected but not quite making milling grades.

Canola: The Canola lost much of it’s gains due to strengthening in the Canadian dollar. The outlook on Canola for next year is promising with futures for March 2021 at 487.50/mt $20.40/mt higher than the current July price. Below is the July futures courtesy of www.barchart.com.

Wheat: Milling wheat markets were depressed the past two weeks. With areas that were short on moisture receiving some much needed rains many weather concerns were lifted and the price fell accordingly. Hard red spring wheat has faired significantly better then winter wheat. Feed wheat prices have followed feed barley. With supplies needing to stretch a few more weeks the price has increased. Spring threshed wheat has been better then expected with most of it meeting the 58 pounds and 14.5% moisture feed requirements.

Buyer Brief – by Sandra Correia-Letendre

Friday, May 14, 2020 Alberta entered it’s first phase of re-opening the economy. Many businesses have re-opened and have people back to work. The cities of Calgary and Brooks will open more gradually due to higher numbers of cases. As we know, JBS beef packing plant is in Brooks. As mentioned in my last buyer brief, there has been a back log of animals at the feedlots ready to go to the beef packing plant due to the COVID-19 outbreak in these plants significantly reducing production. Feedlots have had to continue feeding their cattle during this outbreak which is one attribute to the consistently strong Barley prices. Good news, just last week JBS added back it’s second shift which has gotten local feedlots breathing again. Cargill (High River) and JBS (Brooks) together process approximately 70% of the cattle in Canada. In speaking to a couple of feedlots around the Brooks area this week, they are now almost rid of their cattle for the season. This may affect the spot price for barley, and we may see less demand for quick movement.

This week was slow to start for trades with Memorial Day Monday. Tuesday was back at it. Feed barley and wheat prices are still holding strong for now. We are seeing trades at approximately $235/mt delivered Lethbridge for June/July. Every week we are seeing more and more Spring Threshed barley/wheat come to the market. Their numbers have also been pretty firm, trading at approximately $230/mt ($5/mt less than old crop) delivered Lethbridge for June/July. With many areas in Alberta finishing up seeding, we should see more spring threshed grain surface and farmers ready to market again.

Seller’s Tip: Let us make your life easier during seeding . . . let us help you market your grain. We can take care of the details. Call us at 1-888-969-5552 (ext-9).
