Without question, the greatest recurring question I am asked most: “what’s the price?!” And rightly so. After all–we all want the most bang for our buck. In fact, grain isn’t entirely about money–it’s a measurement of: time, years of craft, discipline, sacrifice, blood, sweat and tears. So it stands to reason that when it comes time to sell, we want profit margins as tight as possible, without leaving any change on the table.
So… “What’s the price!?”
The shortest answers, either: the same place as “the beef” (if you remember that commercial from the 80’s?)–or, better yet: wherever the Sasquatch stops to water his unicorn in the babbling brooks of Shangi-La–at the nexus where rainbow meets pot of gold… there resides… the much sought after… “Price!”… gilded in peacock feathers and gold dust…
In other words, there is no great monolithic price–only great prices. This means that prices vary relative to a vast system of variables that yield highest pricing depending upon factors such as: desired time of grain pick up, time in the season, market variability (such as grain surpluses like spring thresh surplus, or corona-induced buying spikes), grain quality, and even day to day fluctuations that often happen minute to minute based on buyer needs. So simply put, like the mythical mermaid or banshee of Scottish lore… there is no such thing as “The Price.” There are however, only best prices, depending upon where you fit within the system of variables.
This of course brings me to the most important part, using your grade broker properly is one of the single greatest solutions to this problem.
If you’re like me you can’t stand seeing the wrong tool being used for a job. I am reminded of a Simpsons episode where Homer tries to win Marge over after bringing a gun home. “It’s just a tool”, he says: “like a butcher knife, harpoon or an alligator!” And grain traders are no different. I don’t know what tool I’d be exactly… but I do know as a grain trader, my job isn’t to give you market value for your grain–it’s to give as high above market value, as possible!
Therein lies my value as a grain broker. With the above in mind follow these steps and stop using your alligator as a footstool; your harpoon as a toothbrush, and your grain broker as a used car salesman, get the most value out of your local grain trader:
-
- Prices are market driven, not grain broker driven:
we do not control the market. We do not set prices. We have nothing to do with these whatsoever. Markets aren’t even buyer driven… you + the buyer + economic circumstances such as weather, supply and demand and global trade control the market. More importantly, we do not make a commission; there is no spread, just a flat brokerage fee. Whether 1 load or 20, our brokerage is the same. - I am a grain broker, not a grain buyer–and that’s better!
As a broker, I have access to a plethora of buyers that I work with every day, whom I have a relationship with. This means that the best way to ensure the best possible pricing, is to not be satisfied with one person offering to buy your grain–instead.. why not 80!? - I am a middleman–but not JUST a middleman:
One complaint I get from time to time is “you’re just a middleman, why would I use you!?” It’s actually a great point, and it’s not wrong. You don’t need a grain broker, and you don’t need a middleman. But to get the same value as a grain broker, what you would need is to make 100 phone calls a day, every day, to various buyers for market updates ensuring the best price possible. Ain’t’ nobody got time for dat! Or do you? - Proximity doesn’t always mean profit:
The closest buyer to you isn’t necessarily paying the highest price. Circumstances such as tight deadlines, shortages and need in desperate times can cause price spikes that can mean that often, a better deal is had several counties over. So, sometimes the feedlot across the road isn’t always going to fetch the most bang for your buck! - “Seeing what the market does” and doing nothing ARE the same thing:
One of the greatest–if not THE greatest sources of value grain brokers offer is the ability to give you an accurate indication of what the market is doing through the ability to post a live offer. Remember, an offer is not a contract. If you want to see what the market is doing–decide what would be an ideal price–even an obscenely high price! And even if you don’t get it, what you will get is an indication of where the highest bid came back. It’s win/win: If you hit your ask–you got what you wanted, and if you don’t–you can walk away in search of a better deal knowing exactly what the market is doing.
- Prices are market driven, not grain broker driven:
So, with the previous information in mind, “there is no price.” And if there was, it would be found in the same place as the non-existent “Matrix spoon”… in 1975 East Berlin, in a bowl of hot borscht, you hold while wearing fingerless gloves in the dead of winter. In other words, “Price” is for wheat boards and “prices” are for fearless warriors who play… the Game of Grains.

Market Report – by Nelson Neumann
Barley: The feed barley markets have firmed up slightly higher over the past two weeks. Buyers are still looking for barley for end of April and May. Two factors contributing to this are the abnormally cold temperatures pushing back the arrival of spring threshed grain as well as the slow down in the High River beef processing plant causing pens to be fuller then planned for. With Corn prices dropping eyes are on watching as it may prove an economically viable alternative again this year. In my opinion there is downside to the market come June/July and selling for what will be a busy May, may be the high point on the year.
Oats: Oat markets are still under some pressure as demand dries up from end users. Many buyers have bough adequately through the summer. The oat futures market have appeared to recovered out of the trough they found themselves in beginning of April. Speculation on increased demand for grain products driving those gains. www.barchart.com
Peas: Yellow Pea prices have climbed with bids seen as high as $8.00 delivered in Central Alberta. This is up $1.25/bushel from the low of the year. Export demand is still fluctuating as people work through the volatile conditions the pandemic brings. Green Peas however have not tagged along for the ride with prices still ranging $11-$11.75 delivered.
Canola: For the market report two weeks ago, we reported a Chinese return to importing Canadian canola. That statement turned out to be underwhelming as the Chinese still have a restriction on Viterra and the quality requirements are very tight. This took the steam out of the rally Canola had seen. The $CAD is correlated with Canola pricing where we saw a sharp drop along with oil prices. Since then the outlook has been optimistic on a Russia-OPEC agreement which has been strengthening the $CAD lowering Canola pricing. Just what we needed another geo-political event influencing Canola prices.
Wheat: Feed wheat prices have held their own trading into Southern Alberta feedlots on par with Barley in terms of $/mt. Buyers are really looking for the wheat to be dry and the base bid is lower on tough wheat in addition to discounts. Expect to see changes in the feed wheat price in the coming months as the quality of spring threshed wheat unfurls. Milling wheat has seen its’s rise cool off. This was due to an increase in non-perishable grain products which is now priced in.
Thank you Karen Mack for this great photo!
Buyer Brief – by Sandra Correia-Letendre
As life continues through this pandemic, overall, we fortunately don’t see as many effects on the local agriculture market as other industries do. In the last week feed barley and feed wheat prices seem to be slightly up from the previous week. As well, there also seems to be demand for April movement which sellers are pushing for right now to get grain movement before snow melts. Currently we are seeing Feed Barley prices hitting as high as $242/mt delivered Lethbridge with Feed Wheat at $238/mt delivered Lethbridge for May movement. We are not yet seeing a carry for June for either of these commodities.
Real Agricultures article April 13, 2020 is causing some real concern (link is below). It discussed Alberta’s Cargill Beef plant in High River reducing its production by 50%. There seems to have been cases of the coronavirus within the company and they have had to go to 1 shift instead of 2 and have had to implement safety measures to deal with social distancing etc. This will inevitably cause a back log for some feedlots, especially those in central Alberta which were probably shipping to this facility. This will mean that feedlots will need to continue feeding these animals at least until there is grass to let them feed off the pasture. With these concerns, buyers are going to be looking to feed more hand to mouth to see where things go as well as look for cheaper alternatives i.e.) spring thrashed or maybe corn. Buyers are definitely paying attention to the corn market, if prices keep lowering it may become a viable alternative. With all this are you feeling bearish or bullish about the market?
