That first day of spring where the weather is above 10 degrees and the sun shining with the intent of heating things up, and also bringing that essential Vitamin D that we so need, is the day I wait for the longest in the year. This year we got relatively spoiled with how mild of a winter we got, and I was very grateful that when I went out to the outdoor rink that my toes hadn’t froze and fallen off. Alas it was still chilly though, and cold isn’t really my forte all that much either. I mean, if you had the chance to farm and calve in the same weather as your vacation home in Tucson wouldn’t you take it? I know that’d be a no brainer for me.
Unfortunately, spring can be elusive in most parts of western Canada. Some springs seem to suck all the hope that summer is coming. Downpours of constant snow that never seems to stop can be discouraging, until late May comes, and you wake up and it’s miraculously 20 degrees outside one day. Some springs seem to be a hit though. When it’s nearing the end of April and things are already dried indicates that it’s going to most likely be a dry summer. Just as we are hoping this spring and summer can be a little more of this year, and with most meteorologists predicting warmer, drier weather it gives hope that this crop year will bring better yields. A warmer, drier spring also means being able to get out and do sports I love such as Rugby, or even going out and running more, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. We can only hope for a great spring though, but don’t hang your heads if it doesn’t come, there is always summer around the corner to redeem for the off chance that that happens.
It’s the time of year again where things are becoming soft and spring is around the corner. It may be dreadful after seeing the amount of precipitation we saw last year, and not to mention all the crop left out in the fields, but there is something about going outside and enjoying the fresh spring air that nothing else can beat. The fear of a snowstorm or being cramped inside clenching to every ounce of warmth you can get under a blanket is not how I like spending my days, and when spring comes the constant thought of the latter happening becomes less and less. More sun means more of getting out and doing activities I really enjoy, and personally can’t live without.
Speaking of spring, don’t get me started on that last harvest. Fortunately, we have a market with buyers looking for spring threshed grain at-the-moment. So, if you have some grain still left out in the fields that you are sick of looking at and want gone, we have reasonable pricing for contracts booked for May-July movement for salvageable crop. We also can work with you to get you the best price for you spring threshed and can also work with targets as well. Don’t hesitate to give us a call if you need such services now, or when you get the chance to combine it in the spring.

Market Report – by Nelson Neumann
Barley: Feed barley prices have been on a pretty consistent slide since mid-January. Prices have held constant the past two weeks seeing bids around $225/mt into Southern Alberta for April/May. I wouldn’t go as far as to say prices have troughed as there is still little upside in the market. April/May road ban supply shortages appear to be priced in with bids dropping for June/July.
Wheat: Similar to feed barley, feed wheat bids have maintained their value. Buyer’s really looking for dry wheat, with the drop off for tough grain being substantial. Milling wheat bids have not been devastated by Covid-19 market uncertainty with a large sell off happening before the outbreak became sever. We are seeing demand for #1 Amber durum begin to warm up with bids heard as high as $8.50 delivered southern Alberta at 13.5% Protein.
Canola: With crude oil being devastated the Canadian dollar is also being hammered. This is supporting Canadian Canola prices. Canola markets jumped $7/mt or $0.16/bu. Facilities are still behind from rail blockades. Markets briefly rallied on reports of covid-19 hitting Malaysia a key producer of palm oil hard but lost those gains when palm oil plantations were exempted from government mandated closures.
Oats: Oats markets have been steady as they usually are. Buyers still looking for coverage April-July with march almost completely full. $3.00 or higher at the bin is available in most of the oat producing regions of the province. New Crop bids are significantly lower with bids around $2.50-$2.75 delivered for fall delivery.
Peas: 2020 acre estimates are predicting a mild (2%) increase in pea acres, with the bulk of that increase being green peas. Old crop peas are still waiting for uncertainty to die down and China to increase their demand. We are not seeing much demand in the short term for #2 Faba beans. Old crop pea bids ranging $7.00-$7.25 with Greens $4 higher at $11-$11.25 delivered.
Thank you Tracey Cholin for this great photo!
Buyer Brief – by Sandra Correia-Letendre
As I sit here trying to write this, so many things are going through my mind. First and foremost is the coronavirus. Who honestly has not been impacted in some way from this; from stock markets crashing, to not being able to buy toilet paper to knowing someone who may have the virus. The message right from the top, Justin Trudeau, is clear, STAY AT HOME AND ISOLATE YOURSELF. Farmers may have an advantage right now with being more remote as for the most part they are in the countryside with decent distance from neighbor to neighbor.
On a positive note feed grain prices seem to be stable for the last week. We are still seeing Barley trading at $220/mt delivered Lethbridge for March and $225/mt delivered Lethbridge for April-May. Buyers have needed coverage to fill pockets of demand. We are seeing demand come more from grain companies at this time rather than feedlots. The meat industry continues to see a decline and in speaking with some feedlots they are trying hold tight and only buy hand to mouth. The good news is the beef production in Canada is still going strong and operating at full capacity. It may not look like on the grocery store shelves but that’s only because people are stocking up. CCA president Bob Lowe made a statement (see link below), “There are no fundamental changes to the export and import of food and livestock related to the COVID-19 outbreak.” https://calgary.ctvnews.ca/mobile/beef-production-in-canada-a-top-priority-amid-pandemic-says-association-1.4858510
Even though we need to distance ourselves from each other right now, the good news is we are all in this together. Stay safe and stay healthy.
Seller’s Tip: We are still seeing decent prices for feed barley and feed wheat. With the uncertainty of COVID-19 outbreak, and before spring threshed starts coming off it’s a good time to call and discuss a marketing strategy. Please call us at 1-888-969-5552.
