I Hate Waking Up at 5a.m. Let Me Tell You Why I Love It.

By February 5, 2020Blog

My wife Amy’s side of the family goes back 4 generations as dairy farmers whose job and livelihood is based on waking up at ungodly hours. If I got up at or before 5a.m. by choice it was either a fishing trip or an early flight to a warmer climate. Most people don’t make a choice to get up at 5a.m. For years I heard from all of these successful business people or hardcore athletes getting up early in the morning to do their workout and then crush the day. My thinking was, great for them but the earliest my day starts is 6a.m. and that’s plenty early enough. How could waking up early be that big of deal. Then my life and business just kept getting busier, pushing my time to workout all around and most days extinguishing it.

For some reason during the Christmas break something shifted in my head as I thought about my time and how hectic my schedule had become. Looking at my day the only place that I could carve out time to work out was first thing in the morning. Waking up at 5a.m. is only half of the equation. If you’re getting up early you need to go to bed early as well. Which meant that rather than getting ready for bed at 10 or 10:30 I needed to start getting ready for bed at 9p.m., and by I, what I’m really saying is we. It wasn’t until the day before my first 5a.m. workout that I broke the news to Amy, needless to say she wasn’t impressed. She’s used to me trying weird and quirky things out in the name of personal development but most of the time it doesn’t affect her too much. Changing bedtime does affect her, and the fact that I may disturb or wake her up at 5a.m. didn’t win me any awards either, but ignorant or vigilant as ever I proceeded with my plan.

The first night on January 5th again Amy wasn’t impressed with getting ready for bed before our 13-year-old daughter was even asleep, but I pushed through and got all my gear ready for the next day. I woke up right with the alarm and shut it off as quickly as possible, trying to be a quiet. I went to take my multivitamins at 5a.m. which were in the loudest baggie know to man and as I opened it two vitamins fell on the ground under the bed. I then proceeded to turn on the flashlight on the phone right in Amy’s eyes as she wakes up to grunt disapprovingly at me. Not the best first start, but I proceeded to the truck to drive to the gym, which is quite close to my home.

I’m fortunate to have a great relationship with the owner of the gym and have a key. The gym I go to is not the average GoodLife Fitness or Rec Center. It’s a couple of bays full of heavy and awkward equipment with the intention of killing you or making you stronger. I love it. After I figured out where the light switches were and tried not to trip on anything, I continued with my first of now many morning workouts.

I’ve only been doing this for a month now, but I am confident that a habit or ritual has formed. I’m seeing the benefits of this early morning regime in many areas of my life.

  1. I typically train alone and listen to various Podcasts or Books while I train. 60 minutes of a book or Podcast at 1.5 speed helps you consume a lot of information. This time acts as physical and personal development time.
  2. Showing up to the office at 7:30 after training and filling my head with useful information gives me a huge sense of accomplishment and confidence everyday and its only 7:30.
  3. Working out reduces stress, increases energy, and is just plain good for me, not to mention I really enjoy training.
  4. There are huge benefits to being alone for a period of time routinely. With a wife, three kids, and a company the only time that I could do that is first thing in the morning.
  5. Going to bed at 10p.m. is really good, and I haven’t missed anything. The hour I gain in the morning is ten times more productive than the hour I’m losing at night where I would watch pointless shows and likely consume some unhealthy snack.

I share all this to share the point that for some reason I had a belief that waking up before six wasn’t for me and that I could never do it. I was able to change my thinking and create a healthy habit that benefits not just me but my family, and my teammates at Agfinity.

Market Report – by Nelson Neumann

Barley: The feed barley market has softened over the past two weeks, especially for February delivery. We have been predicting it for a while and it was only a matter of when not if. The buyers have adequate coverage through March and lots of grain is being shown for delivery before it warms up in April. To move grain in February instead of March we are seeing bids close to $6/mt or ~13 cents less then March. If you are looking to secure movement for the winter, I would recommend doing it sooner rather then later as there is still a lot of downside to the market. If you are able to load during April/May that may be a timeline to look at as it is before the spring threshed grain will fully hit the market. Speaking of spring threshed grain, we are starting to see some producers looking to forward contract it to secure delivery.

Peas: Both green and yellow peas have seen their prices take a hit as well. Green pea bids are now at $11 and heard as low as $10.50 in central Alberta. Yellow peas have dropped below $7 delivered at around $6.75 central Alberta as well. A major reason for the drop is a decline in export demand. It’s not new news at this point, but the corona virus continues to proliferate in China leading to a decrease in shipments going in and out of the county.

Oats: Despite the decline in the feed barley market, I am seeing opportunities with buyers looking for feed oats pop up at reasonable pricing. Able to do $3.00 FOB farm as far north as HWY 16. Milling oats pricing remains stable with producers still looking to book for May and beyond.

Canola: The Canola market did not have a very good past two weeks. Despite a slumping CDN dollar, the canola price continued to slide. Oilseed prices across the board are sliding with palm oil and soybeans as well. Unless export activity strengthens the path for canola pricing appears to be down. Local crush is at maximum capacity with the lower prices, with January being a Canadian record with 900,000MT getting processed. Canola recently reached a low of $450/mt but has since rebounded to a support at $460/mt.

Wheat: Many commodity prices are falling worldwide, and wheat is no exception. Corona virus is leading to a speculation of the global economy slowing down. It’s also causing uncertainty which the markets do not respond well to. Last week there was a sell-off in US futures with prices falling. Durum was no exception seeing prices fall as well. On a more positive note, despite feed barley dropping feed wheat has been holding its value relatively well. There is still demand for dry wheat that would make hog specs without any ergot. See the drop in wheat reflected in the HRS Minneapolis futures below courtesy of Barchart.com.

Thank you Frank Shufletoski for this great harvest photo!

Buyer Brief – by Sandra Correia-Letendre

Last week was a great trading week. Buyers were buying as they needed to fill up for Feb/Mar and now seem covered. Towards the end of last week and continued this week, prices are on a decline. We are seeing bids for Barley at $225-$232/mt delivered Lethbridge for Feb/March. Feed Wheat bids are closer to $228/mt delivered Lethbridge for Mar/April. We have not seen much action with graded Wheat from buyers the last couple weeks. April is the month to sell to get best bids, if sellers can wait until then. With the market going down not sure if we will see premiums for sellers who can load during road ban season.

We also got out to Farm Tech last week. We saw some of you, which was great to connect. A few of the messages from the speakers we saw was:

  1. March is going to be a cold month compared to normal, for farmers maybe hold off seeding until after
  2. Automation through technology is only going to continue increasing rapidly. So educate yourself and embrace a learn it all culture
  3. Some challenges for buyers are more competition and customers being more aware of trends/prices
  4. Your attitude and habits effect your outcomes. Some winning traits are set limitless goals, build habits that get you through the tough times and create surrounds that help you win

All in all, it was a great week last week. Even with prices for feed dropping we are still seeing good trades this week with some sellers realizing where the market is going and needing to sell.

Seller’s tip: If you must move your grain before road ban season, now is the time to market it. As mentioned above buyers are almost getting full for March movement and then their bids will drop. Call us at 1-888-969-5552.
