To Resolution or Not to Resolution

By January 9, 2020Blog

Happy New Year from Agfinity!

We have started a new decade, wrapped up the holiday season and some of us have made some plans for change this year. I’m not an avid resolution maker, to be honest. I prefer the principle of a standard and steady procession with slight and manageable pivots when needed. I find that any time a dramatic change is set in motion, it is something that is difficult to maintain in the long run. Now, that is my personal preference and, no doubt, resolutions and 180-degree changes work for many. I find that this time of year is a great time to tidy and reset back to the standard. To get things cleaned up after a very busy and somewhat untidy holiday season.

This starts with the “undecorating” of our home. I love Christmas decorations and glowing lights and all the trappings of the season, but it is definitely refreshing to box it all up after the month or so. It is an opportunity to appreciate our home in its typically uncluttered state. This boxing up of Christmas is not a task I love performing, mind you, but I thoroughly enjoy the result.

This task spills over into other aspects of life for us as well. January is a time to get the Christmas baking and treats finished up or cleared away and to get back to our typical way of eating and routines. No doubt this is somewhat difficult in the Billett house as we have three birthdays in the month of January plus several more extended family birthdays. So, despite the clean-up of the Christmas goodies, there is still a lot of cake kicking around all month.

Overall, new starts, whether a new year, the start of a new job, the beginning of the school year, or generally any significant transition in life, are refreshing. They provide us with an opportunity to pivot back to our standards or, for many, to incite dramatic change. At Agfinity we haven’t set out in 2020 with dramatic resolutions, but we are maintaining our standard. We are here for you on a daily basis to help you harvest the best grain trading opportunities. Whatever your new year strategy may be, whether you are looking to move some of your 2019 harvest or start to plan for your 2020 crop year, give us a call. We want to help you with your new year grain marketing plans.

Market Report – by Nelson Neumann

Barley: Prices on barley have remained steady over the holidays. Buyers were covered and had adequate supplies. Mild weather helped feed efficiency reducing demand as well. Come 2020 we have seen an uptick in market activity, but the price has been flat. There are large amounts of supply, much of which is higher moisture and will need to be moved before spring sunshine starts heating it up. I expect to see a large amount of feed come to the market and see little upside in the market.

Wheat: Wheat on the other hand managed to find some traction over the holiday period. Hard Red Spring futures managed mild increases of approximately $6/mt. Durum traded sideways gaining a little then receding back. Feed wheat supply remains abundant with there still being lots of higher moisture wheat available. Prices on feed wheat tracked similar to barley holding steady over the holidays.

Oats: Milling oats saw some mild increases with buyer’s being covered in the short term and are looking to push out delivery. We were seeing very competitive bids for Spring/Summer. There is also an uptick in demand for feed oats with many smaller operations looking for oats to start creep feeding calves.

Peas: Yellow peas bids across most of Alberta have flattened out at $7.00/bushel delivered. This is a key number with many buyer’s able to buy and I would expect it to stay there barring a large shift in market factors. Positive news is that the International Grain Council agreed to start publishing a database for Pulse supply and demand. This is done for most other commodities and will help to bring transparency and market information to the pulse market.

Canola: Canola prices have climbed since mid-December but have encountered strong resistance at $482/mt. Recently palm oil prices dropped as India is refusing to buy Malaysian palm oil at the moment. This is slightly bearish for Canadian canola bids but has yet to fully unfurl. The Canadian dollar strengthened over December but has pulled back recently from it’s high of $0.77/USD. I have attached the March Canola futures candlestick chart below (courtesy of barchat.com) where the strong resistance at $482 can be observed.

Buyer Brief – by Sandra Correia-Letendre

Happy New Year! Hope everyone enjoyed the holiday season and is ready to get back at it.
The couple weeks of the holidays were quiet. It did, however, seem like buyers were more active than sellers. So far this week, we have seen a shift in the market. Demand seems to have increased for Jan-Mar and sellers willing to start selling and at more tonnage. Pricing, however, for feed grains have remained pretty flat with Barley $227/mt-$230/mt delivered Lethbridge. We have had some feedlots looking for some quick movement and, therefore, are willing to pay more. The challenge has been finding trucking at reasonable rates.

My position this week on the market is neutral. Buyers in general are not in any dire need so they are not willing to take grain at any price, but they are still bidding. There is still a lot of grain out there and not much of it moved last month so we may see the market come down shortly as farmers need to sell.

On a separate note, the big news this year so far is the US assassination of Iranian General, Qassem Soleimani. How will this affect us this year? We hope and pray that the US soldiers out there keep safe and that this doesn’t create some crazy war.

Seller’s Tip: Please keep in mind, regardless of today’s weather, spring is a few months away. If you need to sell before than it’s a good time to figure out when you need to market that grain, so it moves by end of March. Especially if you have high moisture grain, you don’t want to hold on to it very long and take the chance for the moisture to increase. Please call us to work on a market strategy together, 1-888-969-5552.
