The Giving Principle

By December 19, 2019Market Report

I was going to talk about how, as the year comes to a close, it’s a great time to reflect and think about the strategy for next year. However, as I write that I can hear my kids saying, “Daddy that’s not right, Christmas is about celebrating the birth of Jesus.” We have a high amount of Christmas movies playing in our home, but we try to take some time to talk and reflect on the importance of the season based on our beliefs.

Amy and I feel it’s important to teach our kids, Truett (7), Samuel (6), and Hannah (13), the importance of giving, gratitude and service. One of the ways that we did this was to take them Christmas shopping for toys on Saturday. We went to the coolest and most fun toy stores and their job was to get toys for some of the children on the list that are less fortunate and also their are cousins. The boys did a great job, there were no tears or sadness. It was a blast! Samuel did say “It’s hard to stay focused in here, there’s so many awesome things!!” Even for Hannah when she saw a Frozen 2 coding game that she thought was cool I mentioned, why don’t we buy that for your cousin then? She recognized that now she can work on it with her cousin and Hannah can still enjoy the gift without having to receive it.

It’s been a challenging 2019 for many of us in Agriculture and many other industries, and I’ve been thinking about how easy it is to give out of our abundance and how hard it can be when things are tight. Christmas seem like a natural time to give because its in the air, it’s the very spirit of the season, the greatest gift ever given. But, when things are tight or haven’t worked out the way that we planned throughout the year, giving gives us a moment of pause. It’s okay we all do it, we make sure all our family and our personal needs are covered first. That’s the responsible thing to do, right? Did you know that giving is a principle? That when we give, regardless of our beliefs and motives it brings an increase and abundance to our lives. Amy and I have engaged this principle in our lives and are trying to teach it to our children.

It’s very counterintuitive thinking but it works. Try it out this Holiday season and maybe come up with a plan to do it throughout 2020 and see what happens.

We just want to thank you again for giving to us this past year. Giving us the chance to work with you to market your grain. Giving us your trust with the grain that you laboured for. Giving us your feedback on how we can be a better, more innovative company. For many of you, giving us your friendship rather than just a transaction. We are so grateful for you and looking forward to doing more work with you next year. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Because Farming is Forever,
Joseph Billett

Market Report – by Nelson Neumann

Barley: The feed barley markets have been relatively quiet as of recent. The Lethbridge market has been hanging around $226 delivered down ~$10 from the highs of late November. Buyers are starting to be covered for January and looking to buy for February already. A common sentiment that I am hearing producer’s hanging on to their crop waiting for a market rally. In my opinion a large pricing surge is unlikely to come and there is little upside to the market. Stats Canada’s latest 2019 report showed barley at $10.38mmt up ~20% from 2018. A lot of that is still in the bins, as well as there is a fair amount in the field which may take the life out of the spring/summer market. A finale thing to consider is that with the wet fall many feedlot pens are a mess and will need to be emptied and cleaned up further reducing feed demands. An additional factor is a reduced demand for export barley.

Wheat: Feed wheat has also held steady seeing prices around $220 into Lethbridge. More barley is being fed then feed wheat. One factor keeping wheat from trading is high price expectation. Milling wheat on the other hand saw futures rising. This was due to optimism on a US China trade agreement which is expected to be fully drawn up in Q1 2020. The outlook is now slightly bullish.

Canola: The Canola market had some life breathed into it by the optimism of the US China potential trade agreement. That news surged the soy complex higher with Canola lagging behind but still along for the ride. A strengthening Canadian dollar dampened the rise. The Canadian dollar is rising due to the American’s liberally printing money. The Canola market remains susceptible to headlines but resistance is now expected around $460, see the chart below courtesy of barchart.com

Oats: Cash bids in Alberta knocked down a few notches based on the previously mentioned Stats Can report. That saw production pegged at $4.16MMT up from $3.44MMT in 2018. Lots of low-quality oats are available and we moved some as high as 20.5% moisture this past week. Feed oat bids are holding steady.

Peas: The red-hot green pea market cooled down a bit with prices still heard around $11 delivered central Alberta. Yellows have hit $7.00 delivered throughout most of Alberta which buyers are able to buy at. Reports indicate that the black sea region may be re entering the market limiting the potential upside for exported yellow peas.

Buyer Brief – by Sandra Correia-Letendre

As the holidays are fast approaching, the markets seem to be getting quieter. Buyers are covered for the time being. Some are even covered for Jan. Buyers are still bidding but many sellers seem to be wanting to wait until the new year before pulling the trigger. This has made demand for December almost non-existent which is tough if sellers need to move it before the holidays. Trucking is also a challenge, it’s very difficult to find truckers who still have openings for December delivery. Overall, there’s not a lot of urgency to trade from the buyer and seller the last couple weeks. I think it’s time to add some rum to the eggnog lol. It will be interesting to see what the new year (Jan) brings.

With that being said, I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and everyone of our buyers and sellers for choosing us when they need to trade grain. It is our pleasure to come to work each day and try to make the best trading opportunities for each of you. We look forward to another year of working together and to the continued strengthening of our relationships. Happy holidays to you and your family.

Seller’s Tip: Do you need your grain moved before the new year? Prices are still good and there are a few buyers that will try to make it work for December for the right price and if trucking is available. If you can re-work things to include Jan delivery you will have more options for bids. Let’s get your grain out there so we can start the new year off on the right foot. Give us a call to discuss at 1-888-969-5552.
