It's tough to see what you're looking at if you don't know where you're standing.

For some time, we have wanted a telescope. Amy and I actually got the bug back in 2007-2008 at Agri-Trade in Red Deer. The company All-Star Telescope had a booth there. Now back then there was no way that we had $1800 to spend on a cool telescope but we both agreed that it was something that we wanted to get into one day. Jump ahead 11 years and my wife had been wanting to get me a telescope for the last few years it just hasn’t worked out, but this fall she was adamant to get one. She called All-Star Telescope and asked what the best Telescope for our family would be, she mentioned that we would like something portable that we can take camping and out to the lake lot without too much grief and they recommended the Celestron Nexstar 6SE. So, our plan was this fall to do a camping weekend at Gleniffer Lake and then spend a few hours at All-Star in Didsbury picking up our telescope and they were going to walk us through how to use this portal to the stars.

Unfortunately, the weekend that we had planned to go to Didsbury we had to shoot down to Abbotsford for a funeral. However just before we left, Amy was looking on Kijiji and for the first time ever actually saw the Celestron Nexstar 6SE posted out of Edmonton for half the price. We went and checked it out, the fella selling it lived in the city with a new baby and realized that he wasn’t going to get out to gaze at the stars at night when he will be needing all the sleep he can get. We agreed enthusiastically about the woes of newborns hoping this would elicit a better price for the telescope. We bought it and took it home and waited impatiently for the next clear night. In case you just got to Alberta and the Spruce Grove area there hasn’t been an epidemic of clear skies, but we were ready when it happened.

Finally, a week ago it was turning into a clear, beautiful evening so Amy and I packed up our telescope and drove to our friends’ acreage just outside of Spruce Grove. Its situated on a quarter section of land so there are no neighbors close by and little light. This was it, the night that we get to gaze into the celestials, we couldn’t wait. The other thing we couldn’t do was get the telescope to work. Now this is pretty cool piece of technology it has a camera that takes a 360 view of your area and you input the date and time and your location and it’s supposed to calibrate where it is and then you can select different stars and wa-la astronomy. Our telescope had no way of knowing where it was, the camera wasn’t connecting to the telescope. This was very frustrating for Amy who had taken all the time and found this telescope and did a bunch of research on how to use it. Then a crystal-clear night comes and its as useless as I was helping her. That night was a bust for star gazing, but we did have a great evening under the stars drinking wine with our friends.

This past weekend after Amy read all the troubleshooting articles and watched all the YouTube videos, she figured it out. Of course, this one cord was in the wrong spot, but what’s important is that on Saturday night we got to see the stars up close. Now we were in the backyard in town and it definitely wasn’t a dark sky preserve but we took it. The kids got to see the rings of Saturn and a handful of other stars and they are hooked. It is a very cool experience to look into space with your kids.

That whole story to say, that the telescope couldn’t look out until it knew where it was. The same goes for your fancy GPS units in your combine and tractor if it doesn’t know where it is, there is no way it can calibrate where it is going. I believe the same goes for us, it’s a lot easier to set a goal in life when we know where we’re starting. That’s the reason we hop on the scale on January 1^st and make a resolution. But this harvest as we wait and wait some more to get into the field take a second and think about where you’re starting and where you want to go this year. Look beyond all the issues with harvest and crappy prices to where are you at, and where do you want to go. I find that I reflect on this a lot in September during harvest, autumn and the start of the school year for the kids. It always feels like the start of a new year. Keep up the grind, here’s to dry days and clear star-filled nights.

Lacey was fortunate enough to be born and raised in Alberta, growing up on a family farm north of Westlock with her two sisters. She takes pride in being a country girl and really enjoys being out in nature or just taking a drive down the back roads. Camping and slow-pitch are among some of her favorite things to do once the warm weather hits; she’s not afraid to get her hands dirty and is up for a challenge, whether it be out on the ball field or in her professional life.

Drop…drop… drop…this is what we have seen in the feed market the last few weeks. How low can this really go? This week barley is trading at $190-$195/mt delivered Lethbridge for Oct/Nov. Buyers seem to be in a good position right now and are still waiting for prices to come down. There doesn’t seem to be as much urgency for spot shipments so far this week.

Harvest is still slow going for most of Alberta. Central Alberta has started combining but there have been many delays due to weather. This has made it hard to trade grain in these areas as the movement continues to move back and buyers are bidding for the most part to get this right away. Once this comes off, there will be a surplus of grain which may continue to bring prices down for the interim. Buyers are counting on this.

“The total harvest was estimated at 18 percent complete, which was up five points from the previous week, but well behind the five-year average of 31 percent done”, according to Western Producer. The good news is in the south, harvest has been well on its way if not complete. Let’s hope the weather cooperates this week so harvest can get into full swing and we can get trading.
