Sometimes you need to take a break, or the break will take you.

A couple weeks ago I shared with you about my epic quadding trip up north to Redfern Lake in northern B.C. including all the great stuff we did being in the middle of nowhere, going through mud holes and some gnarly trails.  What a blessing that there were no injuries, nothing, not even a burned finger or broken can of beer . . . until we got back to Dawson Creek.  On the last day, just minutes before we hopped in the truck to drive back home to Spruce Grove, it was raining (big shocker this year) and I slipped on the grass coming out of the travel trailer.  One of those accidents you don’t want anyone to see because its so lame, but of course my brother-in-law yelled from across the yard, “Hey, are you okay!”  My response, of course, was, “Yes, I just slipped on the stupid grass.” It was clear to me immediately that my right knee was not okay, and it hurt badly. In most circumstances like this I like to employ the time-tested go walk it off and swear under your breath technique, unfortunately this time that prescription didn’t work.  It was a long six-hour drive home with a very sore then stiff leg.  The following weekend we had the Spruce Groves Strongest Man and Woman competition. It was very clear at that point that competing, or volunteering was not going to happen.  I had also planned a hiking trip to do the Skyline Trail in Jasper with a couple of friends on September 7. When I went to my sports physiotherapist he said, “It’s pulled but if you keep stretching it and doing these exercises you should be able to still do the hike in 3 weeks.”  That was great news, even though I wasn’t totally sure I believed him.  Things were progressing with my leg nicely, it still hurt quite badly, but I was trying to do the right things to strengthen and recover it.  The following weekend we watched Spruce Groves Strongest, a great local strong person event that Agfinity sponsors and the next day Amy and I went on a 700km motorcycle ride, because it was almost a nice day and this summer we had to take what we could get.  When I woke up on that Sunday, I felt pretty rough and achy, but put it off thinking it was just my knee.  As the day progressed, I felt more and more miserable, getting home shaking and stumbling into bed, I didn’t have a clue what was wrong and was home sick for the next three days. On the Tuesday after the first day of laying on the couch whining like a small puppy I figured I should go see the doctor.  The scariest thing for me when thinking I’m really sick is going to the doctor and they say, “Oh, its just a cold, drink lots of fluids and get some rest.”  I would never hear the end of that from my wife. I figured this had to be something more but wasn’t sure.  After we got the test results back it turns out I had a strain of E. coli.  Now that’s three days on the couch worthy. The doctor gave me some antibiotics and called to check on me a few days later but I seemed to heal up just fine.  All this story to say that with  2 weeks before the hiking trip and being bed ridden for three days and feeling like the my boys had beat me with hockey sticks all night long I wasn’t feeling entirely optimistic about a 43km hike in Jasper.
Between my fishing trip, my knee injury and E. coli, I had to take 4 weeks off from training in all.  That is the most time I’ve not worked out in the last six years.  It wasn’t easy and what made it even more frustrating is that I had some very cool things planned that I just couldn’t do. I had to rest and recover.  Rest and recovery are very powerful tools that we struggle to ever utilize, typically just like in my story, it takes injury or sickness to force us to slow down and rest.  One thing that I realized over this past month of recovery, is how my plan and vision for training and working out is revitalized, in fact I didn’t really think about training much it was just a thing that I did, but after some time away its amazing how much I missed it.
We have an entrepreneur’s group that meets once a month and I said back in June that we’ll be taking the summer off and will meet again in September.  It was interesting how the older members were all in agreement and the younger ones gave a little push back as to why we needed to take the whole summer off.  When speaking to one of them this week, they expressed how excited they were to meet this month and understood why its good to take a break from routine and schedules for a season.  We all struggle with stopping and resting but hopefully we all had a chance this summer to reset and gather our vision for this year.  Hopefully you were able to choose and it wasn’t forced upon you, for us up north rainy days were in abundance and they really force you to do nothing.

Harvest is here and its time to dig deep and get after it, with long days when possible.  This is the season that all of us in Agriculture wait for and all of us, in our own ways, have to step up and put in the work.  Put us to work, we’re rested and ready for it!  If you need bin space or pricing to help come up with a marketing plan, even to talk strategy about markets for different grades, give us a call we’re hear to help.

Barley: Feed barley prices continue to come under pressure as harvest gets dragged out. So far the barley crop is the largest since 2013 and is a buyer’s market. Lots of the grain is coming in cheaply from Saskatchewan and buyers are buying at these levels. For fall delivery feed lot alley bids have slumped to $205/MT with a very real possibility of it dropping to $200 or slightly below. For further out such as November/December or even Spring 2020 the market is not showing a whole lot of carry at the moment either. Many areas harvest is still delayed, and I predict that it will take into Thanksgiving for these further out bids to shape up.

Wheat: Both the feed and milling markets have continued to slide. The main factor driving feed wheat pricing down is supply and the looming potential of there being a lot more available as harvest continues to drag. At the moment feed wheat is trading at a $10/MT premium to barley into feedlot alley. Globally the wheat crop is abundant and is placing serious downward pressure on the price. Another factor holding down wheat pricing is trade conflict, albeit not the Sino-American conflict we hear about every day. Russia and Ukraine are currently skirmishing with wheat exports out of the black sea region which is dragging down price.

Peas: Unfortunately, there isn’t good news in the pea front. In fact, they are seeing the most harvest pressure. Bids have dropped under $6.00 picked up on farm and many buyers don’t have capacity to take more pulses for fall delivery. The outlook continues to be bearish and there needs to be a serious demand shakeup for the outlook to change.

Canola: The wet conditions delaying the Canola harvest have created a situation where the October November price is lower than that of September. Still under $10.00 but there is potential to reach that level for Jan-March 2020. It may be another year of high green count canola. Last year the canola complex reached capacity for how much green canola it could take during the fall. 

 
Oats: Save the good news for the end. Oats (along with Canary seed) continue to hold their value in the marketplace. Both feed and milling oats bids are holding firm. #2 CW bids are over $3.00 FOB in most parts of the province with feed trading at a $0.25-0.35/bushel discount depending on quality. It remains important to know the specs on your oats especially as poor harvest conditions continue. If they do not meet the required milling specs there will be severe consequences such as steep discounts or more usually load rejection.

The further we get into harvest the more we continue to see the market drop. Producers are starting to pull the trigger before it drops any further. Trading momentum is still coming in waves.
Weather continues to play a factor in getting the crops off. Peace Country to central Alberta has seen more and more rain. As of this week Peace Country has even experienced frost. Due to these conditions, we are seeing premiums for September delivery for Wheat and Barley especially. We are not how ever seeing much of a carry in the market. Not yet anyway. We are still hearing there will be more feed grain this year than last which also drives prices down.
Something we are just starting to see is very slight ergot in Barley in areas that have been very wet this season. This would have the biggest effect on hog farms. Don’t fear, this is not a problem yet. It is important for farmers to really know their grain. Sellers having untested grain creates an issue for buyers when it is sold at a milling quality but comes in grading a feed. Consequences of it not making grade can be severe such as rejection, which is not ideal for all parties involved. Some buyers have even mentioned they are willing to work with the seller if they are aware of the issues before it’s shipped. We want to avoid any discounts to producers and headaches to buyers as much as possible. Wishing you all a smooth harvest.
Seller’s Tip: Farmer’s when you can please have your grain graded, especially in a buyer’s market where there is a lot of grain available, and buyers don’t need to take any grain that doesn’t meet their needs.   The more information we have to market your grain the easier it is to sell to the right buyer.
