Redfern Lake is about 3 hours north of Dawson Creek along the Alaska Highway and another 80kms in by quad. This maybe doesn’t sound so bad, but when we’re loaded up with gear for five nights and we aren’t certified sport fisherman we figured it was a safe bet to bring lots of chow. On Sunday we woke up in Dawson Creek at 4:30a.m. and arrived at our camp at Redfern at 8:30p.m. It was a beautiful day, but a long one. Below is the lake on the first morning when we woke up and the reason we make the trek.
One of the things that I learned how to do, well sort of learned how to do, on this trip was fly fish. Below is a picture of Jacob in the background and me fishing. Well, let’s be honest, Jacob’s fishing and I’m untangling my line. However, this is the spot where Jacob caught his first fish on a fly rod. It was awesome, it was right around when this picture was taken. I turned around and shot a video of Jacob catching the fish and realized that when I turned around my line got caught so I put my phone back in my pocket and got my line untangled. Later when Jacob came by to replenish his beer, I mentioned that I had gotten the whole thing on video, and went to reach for my phone . . .
Now a weird feeling happens when you lose something you hope it’s just somewhere else. Maybe I put my phone in my bag, or it fell into a shrub, but as Jacob, Cody and I start searching the next logical location comes to light. “Could you have dropped it in the river?” says Cody. I don’t really want to entertain that theory because I know exactly what comes next. So, when my father-in-law comes around the corner and sees me in the river thinking I’m noodling for fish he just shakes his head. Just a reminder that mountain lakes are fed by glaciers and they are made of ice, and ice is cold and then lakes feed into rivers. So, after a few attempts and differing theories we called time of death on my phone (even though it had a waterproof case and was on airplane mode it probably kept running for quite a few days when at the bottom or floating down the river).

Market Report – by Nelson Neumann
Barley: Harvest is well underway throughout the prairies except for where the fields are still underwater. With the beginning of the new crop year old crop barley premiums have all but evaporated. Throughout most of August we were able to secure quick movement prices for old crop, but those buyers are now receiving new crop. New crop bids have also slid with barley production coming in better than expected in a lot of areas. Delivered feedlot alley bids now heard around $210/MT (4.57/bushel) for fall delivery. This is down ~15/MT and the outlook continues to be bearish. As mentioned in my first sentence some production regions have not begun harvesting and an early frost could cause more barley intended for malt to enter the feed market. These lower prices are the new reality for the 2019/2020 crop year.
Peas: Unfortunately, the pea market is experiencing some serious pressure and remains quite soft. India importing peas remains a key factor for all the pulse markets. Picked up at the bin bids for fall delivery are seen sub $6.00 in most parts of the province. This summer had more hail then usual and may lead to a larger supply of feed peas.
Wheat: The global wheat complex has an excess of supply at the moment, grinding the wheat market lower. Similar to barley, any and all old crop premiums have disintegrated as buyers are now paying new crop levels. An early frost or continued harvest delays could lead to an influx of feed wheat into an already satiated market. Feed wheat bids are ranging from $5.70 in southern Alberta to $4.50 in the Peace.
Canola: The Canola markets are carrying the China crisis into the new crop year. Last week there were some premiums available for quick movement on old crop Canola, such opportunities when available are an excellent chance to sell as the market continues to drag its feet. One factor that isn’t helping is that there is significant holdover from last year. Below you can see the canola futures for last year courtesy of barchart.com. Canola currently seeing support at $442/MT.
Oats: Good old steady oats, while the rest of the markets are doomy and gloomy, oat pricing appears stable. In many areas #2 Milling oats are able to reach $3.00 at the bin, a key number for many producers. The feed oats market is still figuring itself out with bids around $2.50-$2.75 depending on quality.
Buyer Brief – by Sandra Correia-Letendre
Harvest is underway! Combining has started in southern (Lethbridge south) and northern Alberta (MacKenzie County). It’s starting to be a buyer’s market now that supply has increased. Premiums for old crop have died. Old crop and new crop prices have amalgamated. New crop prices have also been going down slightly as harvest continues.
There are still a few feedlots that need a load or two for immediate movement due to their crops not being ready to harvest. For the most part buyers are not in dire need, therefore not willing to hit above market prices for grain. If anything, we have been getting calls the last few days with buyers lowering their new Crop bids.
There are still large areas that are not ready to harvest. This is due to wet conditions or not enough sun to mature the crops. This has made some sellers reluctant to market their grain until they see their yields. Sellers have also not been willing to lower their prices as they want to see where the market goes. As mentioned, buyers are currently content to pass if not buying at their bid.
Seller’s Tip: If you need bin space, you may want to sell even a few loads of your new crop to clear up some space. We are always ready to help. Call 1-888-969-5552.

“For the past seven years I’ve been dealing with the Agfinity group and what a fantastic group of people they are. From number 1 to feed grain and canola. All the buyers at Agfinity can Make it happen. Fast turn around times on every thing. Movement, payment, and the inbetween that all of us farmers don’t see or care about. Good job to the Agfinity crew and keep on buying our grain.”
