Who’s dumber, the person who asks a dumb question or the person who has the question but doesn’t ask?

About 45 minutes West of Stony Plain, and 10 minutes north of Lake Isle or Isle Lake, I’m note sure which one it is, there is a small R.V. resort and lake called Lake Arnault and we have a lake lot there. This will be our second year here. Amy and I camp quite a bit and loading up the trailer every weekend to go out was starting to wear on us, so we figured we’d try this lake lot thing last year and we’ve really enjoyed it. It’s nothing crazy and the lake is a typical Alberta lake, pretty to look at but not advisable for swimming and the fish population consists of leeches and goose poop. What we love, though, is the fact that we always have a camping spot and its not far away. In fact, its close enough that we’re staying out here for the next couple of weeks and I’ve been riding my motorcycle back and forth. It’s giving us a little retreat and peace without too much effort.
Well . . . that is until we’ve had such a wet year! Now if things have been really dry for you I apologize Maybe skip reading the next couple of sentences. Our lake lot is in a lower area of the resort and it was just cleared a couple of years ago. The road is really soft, actually to the point that we got our trailer stuck a few weeks ago. The lot can get muddy with all the rain and the clay, not to mention 6 and 7-year-old boys that totally think that shoes are optional at the lake lot. Amy and I have differing views on this subject, I think that wearing socks to bed to keep your sheets clean because your feet are filthy is a totally viable option, Amy does not. So, because of all this moisture and mud, with the boys and the dog as well we thought it would be a good idea to make a gravel pad around the fire pit and eating area. Now this sounds good in theory, but I am not the “hey I love tackling projects” guy. I used to do landscaping and concrete when I was younger but am daily grateful to be able to sit at a desk. You think to yourself “how hard can it be?” We can do this! Well, we finished the original project and then as usual we looked and said “hey, why not keep going with the 6 by 4 beams along the edge of the driveway”. So yeah, we’re still working on it this week in the evenings hoping to have it all complete for the August long weekend. I think the project turned out quite well and I remembered some of my skills with setting up string lines and grade to make it work. However, always in the back of my head I head the fear “what I totally screw this up and it looks terrible?”.
No doubt I would have preferred to go fishing and mountain biking or even read a book with a cold beer in hand, but we knew that this simple gravel pad would make our lake lot experience that much better and enjoyable, and it has. However, the fear of looking foolish or stupid and making suggestions that seem dumb is definitely a fear I have and I’m pretty sure I’m not alone on that one. Was I more concerned about the work or was my fear based on failing, and the pad looking like garbage? I’m pretty sure it was the latter as Amy kept making statements about how particular I was being about the string lines and things being level. I think its healthy and for us to step out and try projects or things that may make us look stupid or that we may fail at or speaking up to make suggestions that could easily be shot down. First of all, you’re probably way more capable at that thing than you think and secondly, just because you think your idea is dumb doesn’t mean others will as well. Taking that step, the way Amy and I did on this project opens the door for our neighbours to see what it possible and ways that they can enhance their lots or ways that they can do it better. It always takes someone to step out and see if it will work and possibly fail at it.
When I confront those fears and am not afraid of looking stupid, or suggesting an idea, regardless that it might be a terrible one, it opens the door for others to be transparent and share their ideas as well. I’ve found that when I don’t understand something or it doesn’t make sense, and I speak up and ask for clarity, I find that I’m not the only one that is not getting it. Then together we can simplify or solve the issue. So sometimes in this grain marketing thing, we’re going to make dumb suggestions or possibly ask silly questions as we work to provide value to you and help you solve the marketing problems you face. We won’t have all the answers unless we ask empowering questions and sometimes they might be dumb ones but we won’t know until they come out. We welcome you to ask us questions as well and pick our brains on these markets and opportunities and we’ll do our best to give you all the options, the genius ones and the dumb ideas as well because most of the time the crazy ideas are the truly great ones.

Barley: Over the past week the wheels fell off the old crop feed barley bus. New crop is tantalizingly close in southern Alberta and buyers are more then content to buy then much cheaper. We saw pricing delivered feedlot alley plummet down from ~$265 to $245 within a few days. New crop pricing is around $5 higher than it was last year for September and October delivery. The American corn market bulls have cooled down, but the debacle down south is a support for domestic feed pricing.

Peas: Seeded acres were up ~20% for pulses and with yields looking decent there will be an excess of supply for the 2019 crop year. India the major buyer is continuing to run protectionist tariffs. The outlook is that it will be another grinder year for yellow peas.

Oats: If you are hanging on to milling grade oats, it would be wise to sell now or be prepared to store it well into next year. Still seeing very strong prices for milling quality oats for August delivery. New Crop bids are around $3 delivered, much lower than we can get picked up on feed oats at the moment.

Canola: The Canola markets have been relatively flat with no major swings, only minor fluctuations. It continues to trade around $440/MT. Looking into 2019/2020 yields are forecasted to be down ~2% due to a cool summer and dry spring. This is usually bullish but is drastically overshadowed by China still refusing to purchase from Richardson as well as Viterra.

Wheat: Outlooks is bearish for the wheat market the upcoming year. Worldwide production is forecasted to be excellent for 2019/2020. A major factor is the American corn crop. If things fall apart and there is a major corn rally wheat prices may follow its lead.

As we get further into summer, the pace has started to slow down for trading. Buyers are hard to get a hold of either due to vacations or no current demand. Lethbridge buyers are bearish when it comes to old crop. We are seeing pricing at the same levels from Calgary area as we are Lethbridge due to feed barley coming off. You would think traders could take it easier right now but at this time of year they have to work harder to find the old crop grain that is still around to trade.
Overall Buyer bids have dropped. With new crop around the corner, especially in southern Alberta, some buyers are holding off buying or they are waiting for old crop barley prices to further drop. Some sellers are coming around to realizing where the market is at today, which is where trades are getting made. Most feedlots seem full as well and they are also waiting to see how their crops turn out. Central Alberta crops seem to be a little behind, so some feedlots are still needing a couple loads of old crop to get them by.
It’s exciting to know harvest is weeks away. I’m sure farmers are anxiously awaiting to see what their yields are. Hopefully the last of bins will be cleaned up this next week for old crop and we’ll start fresh in the new season.
Seller’s Tip: We are seeing prices drop daily. Currently, there doesn’t seem to be any reason to believe old crop prices are going to go back up. Sellers, if you need to empty your bins before harvest, this is the week to market it. For help to market your grain call us at 1-888-969-5552.
