Ride the Wave

By July 24, 2019Market Report
It’s riding season, not only for motorcycles (as Joseph wrote about last week), but in a kid’s world, bikes. My seven-year-old has been riding a bike the last couple years but still had his training wheels on. He wasn’t feeling confident to take his training wheels off. A couple friends of ours had put their kids in bike camp. My first thought is really, there is a camp to learn how to ride bikes. I thought let’s give this a try and see if it helps his confidence.
Day 1, my son was pumped to go to camp. I was excited to hear all about it. To my surprise he wasn’t very happy when I picked him up. I asked him how it was, and his words were “well it sucked”. They took off his training wheels and I guess the bike was too big in their opinion. His feet weren’t sitting close to the ground so he couldn’t hold the bike up. He kept falling off. Great, I thought we need to buy him a new bike when he just got his last year. So, we went and got him a new bike that night.
Day 2, “Mateo how was bike camp today”, I asked crossing my fingers that it was better. “Mom I actually rode a few steps without falling”. Yay, I thought.
By day 5, the last day, the camp has a parade for the parents to see the kids progress. Mateo didn’t want to show us anything during the week, he wanted us to wait until the parade to see how he’d developed.
Parade day– I was looking forward to it all day. I left work early to make it to the parade for 3:30pm. Each kid got to show case their skills one at a time. When it was my son’s turn, he was all smiles and looked at me and gave me a wink like “I got this mom”. And he’s off on 2 wheels…got through the first part of the obstacle course, jumped the ramp (with a spotter) and gets to the end and uses his stop signal and brakes. I cheered loudly so he could hear, and I was all smiles now. How proud we both were.
He road the learning wave and wants to ride his bike all the time now.
Many times, farmers have to ride the pricing wave. Since April we had been seeing an upward market. Up until a few weeks ago we were at the top of the wave for Feed Wheat and Feed Barley pricing. How exciting for farmers to see record highs for their feed grains. As we get closer to harvest now, prices seem to be declining each week. The challenge we as a broker are currently facing is getting farmers to see that the market is changing and agree to tradeable values for their feed grains. When target prices are too high, especially when the market is on a downward trend, this has buyers reluctant to even bid; therefore, pausing trades. Farmers, if you have grain in your bins you need to get rid of before harvest, now is the time before the market drops any further. All the best for harvest.
