A Stroll Through Time – Nelson Neumann

Yesterday evening I was enjoying the summer going on a walk by the Sturgeon River in St. Albert, Alberta. Along the way I saw many interesting components of Alberta’s history, starting off with the a few beavers in the slow moving waterway and concluding with two monolith’s of the prairies, the historic grain elevators.

Additionally there was a small white building at the top of the hill. This little white building is the Father Lacombe Chapel; the oldest standing building in Alberta. It was built in 1861 by Father Albert Lacombe known from the Edmonton Region to Peace River as “the man with the good heart”. I found it amazing how in such a short distance three distinct time periods are all represented: the fur trade, early settlement and lastly the grain elevators representing agriculture.

What I also found amazing was that the 6th oldest standing building in Alberta built just 27 years later looks so drastically different. The Banff Springs hotel was built in 1888.

Barley: THIS IS A SELLERS MARKET! Prices into Lethbridge have continued to stay strong over the last few weeks with delivered pricing being as high as $282.47/MT (6.15/bu) for June-July delivery, and targets getting picked up!
NEW CROP BARLEY: Has continued to make its way up as well seeing $230-235/MT for August delivery.
Wheat: Feed wheat into Lethbridge has been holding its head up high, seeing numbers of $268/MT delivered. With barley supplies for old crop being more and more difficult to find, feed wheat has become a hot commodity and a seller’s market.
Peas: In the past few weeks there has been a few yellow pea opportunities pop up throughout the Edmonton and Calgary areas. These opportunities are still not to the level that most producers are looking for, but they are great opportunities to get some moved before new crop comes here in a few weeks. Green pea demand has been strong.
Canola: Canola is like a child’s roller coaster, one minute it is up a few cents and the next minute it is down a few cents, but never making any crazy moves. Buyers who do have homes for it are becoming slim and their availability is short. If you see a good opportunity at a profitable price jump on it and sell some because before long new crop will be coming off.
Oats: Oats have been the superpower crop of the year with buyer’s demand growing as the year has gone. It is very uncommon for buyers to pay around $4.00/bu delivered around central Alberta here in the last week for a feed oat. Buyers have been turning to buying oats as the price of barley and wheat with oats being less expensive to feed. As feed oats increase milling oats are right behind it slowly climbing to reach demand.

Rain? Most Farmers seem to be asking for some. Saskatchewan and southern Alberta seem to be in dire need. The lack of shower activity is causing uncertainty in what size this year’s crops will be. This is really holding farmers back from selling their new crop, causing buyers to have a hard time hitting their New Crop feed numbers. This is pushing prices upwards for these grains.
The market is still on a high. Buyers are hitting new numbers (even some instances of higher than the ask) for Feed Barley, Feed Wheat and Feed Oats. Supply is still low. It’s been challenging trying to keep up to the demand, but we are still finding it. How much further up can the market go? How much demand is there still out there?
Seller’s Tips: It’s a good time to market your New Crop. “A spring/summer pricing rally can be a good time to lock in at a profitable level for new crop” (Nelson Neuman-Agfinity Senior Trader).
